I'm taking my forks apart because one of the stanchions is bent from a bad fall I had in Portugal. I need a special tool to take it apart and although it's possible to do it without, I prefer to know it's done properly when I put it back together. I have an alternative reason here for wanting a tool, I recently bought a MIG welder and I just want to weld and make anything I can so I want to make my own tool.
The Yamaha part number is: YM-01418
This is what it looks like: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352125427172
The question I have then is: does anyone have a tool like this or access to the innards in order to measure the size where the "nut" part will go to hold things? I'd very much appreciate if you can do this for me and let me know what it is.
The plan is to buy the right size nut, drill it out so it will go over the damper rod and weld it to an appropriate pipe. Simples!
27mm across the face, which I believe is a M18 nut.
When I made the tool, I ground the nut flat on the edge that you put into the fork, as where it locates is not very deep and if the nut has a rounded edge it may come out and do some damage.
i had one that had a hex tapper on the end... was a factory suzuki tool... fitted any size damping rod with a hex...
never used it that often... it just disapaired over the years...
Made the tool this weekend, I knew that off cut IKEA curtain pole would come in handy some day :) Worked a charm, forks disassembled and the bent stanchion is packed, ready for sending away for straightening.
