i have a suzuki gt550 3 cyl 2 stroke it has been stood a few years i looked in the petrol tank & it was quite rusty can anyone recomend any cleaner to remove rust also do i have to remove the tap because it has a diaphragm it it also will it damage my paintwork many thanks john
The accepted OLDFASHIONED way to clean a steel tank is to remove the tap and plug the hole then throw in a handfull of nuts and bolts, liquid (paraffin, petrol, water) then plug the cap hole and shake it all around.
Repeat the procedure as many times as you can till clear of rust.
It's also a cheap(ish) way of clearing rust.
Obviously don't throw big nuts and bolts in - unless you prefer an orange peel effect externally.
You can try Coca Cola. It is the small amount of phosphoric acid that removes rust. The negative side effect is that any pin holes blocked by small amounts of rust, will start leaking. At any of the Coke plants, the truck engines are cleaned from the soda fountains on site. True story.
I give a tank a swill with Fertan rust killer and a hand full of old nuts and bolts as Martyn has said then leave it over night then swill out with a cup full of diesel it will sit for years on a shelf ok like that
