Oil Pump Gear noise?

Hello all. New to the world of TTRs and new to this forum. I'm quite pleased to have found this site and the wealth of info contained within. I have been reading through and learning a lot from many of the threads. I do however have a specific question.

I bought a non-running project bike and have thus far managed to get it running and have had it on 1 ride, but am experiencing a worrying metallic rattly noise that at first I thought could be a cam chain. I purchased a new cam chain and set about replacing it, only to find with the cam chains side by side there appears to be no difference in length.

I did however notice that the gear for the oil pump is quite sloppy. It has both slight rotational play, and in-out wobble on the shaft. Not sure if there is supposed to be a spacer between the gear and the retaining circlip, or how much play is normal, but it seems to me that this could very well be the cause of my noise.
How much, if any, free play is normal? If it is supposed to be nice and tight any suggestions how to determine the cause or solution? Possibly just a worn out gear?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Cheers.

Hi Daryl and welcome to the forum!

If you look at the photo of the insides of the oil pump below you will see that the impeller is located an a pin and, by its very design. there is bound to be some play.

There is no washer - just the circlip and, yes, the drive gear does have quite a bit of free play.

I haven't come across an oil pump that rattled and my guess is that your rattle is caused elsewhere.

Remember that the TTR has an old school air-cooled engine that transmits every noise to the outside world - exaggerated by a bashplate if you have one fitted. If you are used to water-cooled engines then the difference is very noticeable!

As other owners have found, rattles and clunks that sound as if they are coming from the engine can quite often be traced to loose engine mounting bolts, sprocket covers, etc. so make sure all those are OK wink

Good luck.

Brian

Thank you for the quick reply and info Brian! I will triple check that all motor mount bolts and shield bolts etc are tight. I neglected to mention in my first post that the noise changes with rpm, and occurs regardless of in motion or not, clutch in/out, loaded, unloaded, etc.
I'm relatively new to the world of dirt bikes. My previous bike was a 95 tw200 so I don't have a lot of experience with what noises are normal and which are cause for concern. ☺

Can you buy oil pins separately? I looked on cnmsl and cant see that you can. I lost mine in the rebuild and used a filled down pop rivet for the first fire up just to here it run. I imagine that's not the strongest solution and reluctant to ride it more than up and down the road as a tester.

Cheers

I think that pin is hardened. Rivet shank is particularly soft. Don't go any further for gawd's sake!

Perfect! Thank you!!!:) I've used a bolt for now, much stronger than a rivet according to my hammer. Not exactly a long lever arm protruding from the shaft and very little resistance in the pump in all reality. I'll go for a ride around the block like this tomorrow maybe. I'll order hardened pins later today and fit them once I get some banjo bolts for my new oil cooler :)

Thanks again
