Carb drain/breather hose routing

Just purchased a 2004. Prev owner said bike has sat since 8/16. The bike will not start. After looking at the carb, one of the hoses is not connected. The hose on the left hand side is connected and the drain hose is also. However on the right side of the carbs hose is no where to be found. Any chance that is my issue>

 EDIT: After looking at it further the drain hose "T's" into a one way vent and the other into the double hose breather. Does anyone have a hose diagram for the carb?

The diagram in the workshop manual isn't brilliant!

thanks alot that helps! It looks as if the left and right hoses connect to a double breather next to the airbox and also vent out by the swingarm. Might have something in the inlet of the one without a hose connected or maybe just a gummed carb. Looks like I will be taking the carb off tonight and checking the float/jets.

I went ahead and sprayed some carb cleaner on the filter and it started right up. Then died almost as fast. Sounds like a float stuck to me.. I took the drain screw out and nothing came out even though I had fuel on for 6-7 hrs prior. not getting fuel. Ill get it figured out.

Took the carb apart last night and the float needle was stuck up in the chamber. Had to take the float pin out and clean the needle. Still would not allow air to pass through the fuel inlet into the needle/valve. It started and ran on full choke once I got it back in. I suspect its a clogged float needle valve filter. Can you get one of these to come out without a slide hammer? Can I just clean it and reuse it?

Also do you think I need to run larger jets while I got it out? The prev owner cut a larger hole in the air box and took out the snorkel.

Glad It just runs.. Now I need to get it dialed in

A quick test is to run the bike without the airbox cover. If it runs worse then your mixture is probably OK or on the lean side. If it runs better then you are over jetted!

A plug chop is probably the best way forward if you think the TTR isn't carburretting (?) properly.

About to tackle the carb again. If it's not running unless it's 1/2 choked should I look at anything specific? Seems to run without hesitating to wot. Just have to ride it with the choke 1/2 out. Air screw maybe?

It sounds like the pilot jet is clogged. It has a very small hole and carb cleaner or ultra sonic baths rarely clean it out properly. You need to ream it with some soft copper wire.

Clean pilot and made turned out the pilot 2 turns. Started and ran great at idle with no choke. Seemed like everything was great. Took it for a run and not even 100 feet out it fell on its face at 1/4 throttle. Wouldn't even accelerate without killing it. Maybe I should have left the jet alone?

It sounds as though you have solved one problem but have found a different one!

It sounds as though the pilot jet is now clear and the TTR runs up to 1/4 throttle with no choke. Result. Not sure why you think you should have left the pilot jet alone? 

It is difficult to diagnose carb problems from afar but it sounds to me like you may have a fuelling problem if it won't rev out.

Put some rag under the carb and undo the drain plug on the bottom of the float bowl. Check that you get a good flow of petrol. Also, is it clean and no water droplets?

If that's all OK then you will need to look elsewhere. 

It is unusual for the main jet to block but not unknown.

My money is on a sticking float needle or blocked fuel filter.

Forgot to tighten the main jet and it was almost all the way out. I knew I was running right for a bit. Thanks for the help Brian. I got it running like a clock and pulls wheel off the ground, and tops out smooth as butter. 👍

I have been asked about routing of the carb drain/breather pipes' routing. Probably best explained in photos. These are the best I have so if anyone has better ones please share them here

The short pipe is obvious from the first photo but the second is less clear. It runs down between the frame rail and crankcases. The one-way drain valve on this pipe is unlikely to fit through the gap so best to put it in place before fitting the  engine if you are doing a rebuild.
