Back Country Navigator for Android

I use an app called Back Country Navigator, it cost me $20

and all the maps are free, it works perfectly on my Sony Xperia T2 phone with a 6" screen

in fact it's bullet proof so far, you download maps over the wi-fi and then use the app in off line mode

Here's a you tube link for really top notch tutorial

Inport KML or KMV formats saved from google maps or earth, maybe GPX as well, can't remember ATM

For those in the UK Back Country Navigator also allows you to download (or cache using proper terminology) the Ordnance Survey maps too. Both 1:25k and 1:50k scales are available, you can select a whole area and download the map files at home on your Internet, then use them or in the field without any data connection.

Hi Simon, you been using this app for a while have you ?

So far it hasn't made an error and stays locked on as long as you keep the GPS running all the time

what type of phone you using.

A trick I have been using lately is to create a track in google maps and then make a copy

name them "yourname layer1 and yourname Layer2

then load them both and make them both visible, what it does is makes the density of the track colour much darker

if you  look at the screen shots some are 2 layers and some are 1 layer, slight colour difference but makes a difference

when on the trails.

..

Generally on the bike i use something different, MMTracker, which allows me to use all my old memory map files is which I have for a lot of the country. It does what i need for planning and running routes and for displaying the overlays we have in the uk that show the legal reasons, so that's my go-to tool. I tend to use BC Nav only if I'm browsing or travelling to an area that I don't have the OS Map files for. Both the above running on a Samsung Galaxy S4, in a waterproof case when in the bike!
