I have been in the exact same place as you are now Was a few years ago and I learnt some hard stuff.
First make sure you flush the bottom of the engine out properly, when you get it back together use a magnetic sump plug. This will help pick up any stray bits that you do not flush/ clean out.
The parts you bought only came to me yesterday, so looks like that was good timing.
As for the starter we found the aftermarket ones to be of inferior quality and will not use them ( has any one found a good aftermarket one?)
There is some interesting reading about starters if you use the search facility above.
I used an old fazer one to convert and make it fit and it is still going strong
Steve has made some good points! It is never worth doing half a job when a worn sprag clutch has started to do damage.
In my time looking after Totally TTRs I had a number of repeat sales of starters and idler gears when owners (and bike shop mechanics in a couple of instances) wouldn't accept that the sprag clutch needed replacing
Make sure you wash out the needle bearings in the casings and check them for damage.
Steve has new ones in the shop if needed. If the bearing housing in the generator cover is damaged then a good second-hand replacement is available here https://totallyttrs.com/epages/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84/Products/TTR-0510
Good luck. Lots of help and advice available here if you need it!
Now you have bought the starter, just keep an eye on it.
Some had problems with the bushes I think, but the one I bought seemed to have a pinion made of cheese If It shows any signs of shedding metal get rid of it.
Also the magnets in the casing don't seem to be held on properly and I had to take back a couple where they had broken and damaged the armature
If the magnets break up and don't damage the armature then the body of the original starter will fit. Keep yours back just in case Dan
For anyone else, Steve keeps the bodies in the shop - see https://totallyttrs.com/epages/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/699105d9-e4cc-4b32-b236-84e72cd67f84/Products/TTR-0446
The starter from the Yamaha Majesty yp 250 is the same as the ttr starter. You just have to swap the back mounting plate from the ttr to the majesty starter as they are different. There is a post on it if you search for it. I found it to be the easiest and cheapest way to replace the starter and also i think the the majesty uses the same sprag according to the part numbers but i have not seen one to compare them. As an example of prices i bought two 2nd hand starters for €70 and the 1st one is still working fine.
Trying to tidy up the starter motor information and found this old post:
I had are request from Joel in Australia for some ideas to sort out his after-market starter motor.
When he pulled the body off his starter's armature, the magnets had come adrift of the body (unglued) and hence got caught up in the starter armature itself.
This had been a bit of a problem for him over the past few rides, where the starter/solenoid would ‘click’ but no starter spinning up and heating/melting of the main starter cable if the button held in.
He thought it a dodgy solenoid but now realises it was because the starter itself was jammed up internally. This starter was lucky if it had 100 starts on it and a grand total of about 20hrs in service (on the bike)
This was the second motor he had bought from the same seller on eBay which both developed the same problem.
I have a box of dead starters most of which were taken out of commission because of damage to the pinion gear caused by a worn sprag clutch. I found a good body from an original starter motor and sent it over the water and was pleased to hear back that it fitted and the starter now works fine
I have heard from another UK owner who had the same issue but resolved that with a replacement starter motor as we hadn't realised that the original starter body would work with the after-market starter motors - but we do now!
I hope that may help someone now or in the future.
Thanks for finding that old post, I have now received the idle gear and the sprag clutch, just waiting on this potentially dodgy starter motor to turn up
Sorry for the late update. Got the bike all put back together with the new parts last weekend. Put some fresh oil in and it started fine, no nasty noise when turned off now, just a nice quiet click. The Chinese starter motor seems fine, it was hardened on the spindle and is working without problem.
I am now very happy to have a working bike again, thanks for the help and advice
