hi,wonder if someone can give a bit of advice with my bike,have not used it since march of this year,drained fuel and cleaned carb out which was full of green gunk,mananged to get to the mot shop and all good in that respect,my problem seems to be fueling,very erratic on idle,difficult to start and very unresponsive so turned to manual and set float height as per book which to looks as though the float sits quite low in bowl with not a great deal of movement to fuel shut off point,i then looked at jets which are different to ones listed,i have 157main and 50pilot,whereas manual has 137 and 52?? would this mean i may need a different float height setting? or are the fitted jets normal for a 51 plate ttr.

did try using the fuel level method last night and that seems worse,any help much appreciated,

ps just noticed manual is dated 1981 through 2000

Hi Rodge!

Important question. Did your TTR run OK before you laid it up?

If so, the size of the jets isn't an issue. It almost certainly a blocked or partially blocked pilot jet causing your problems - assuming your air filter is clean and oiled, there are no air leaks and you are using fresh clean petrol.

Hi Brian,trust all well with you,
bike did run fine before,maybe a bit of fuel starvation at high speed with throttle wide open in top,i put fresh petrol in as old stuff smelt odd and looked discoloured,air filter all good,have tried spraying wd40 around inlets etc with bike running and no real difference there,i was thinking pilot jet issue, but have cleaned that along with passageways with airline and carb cleaner and was wondering if green mucky stuff may have rotted/damaged pilot jet it in anyway?

now i know your not to do this but if i put a very small drill bit upside down in pilot jet and wiggle it around the shank of drill is covered in green dusty residue,and seem to recall on other bikes where i've cleaned jets before that the pilot sometimes has an internal honeycomb section and mine under a magnifying glass and bright light appears to resemble a jagged hole,like the middle is missing from it.

 Hi Rodge - all well here ta!

Don't panic about the pilot jet. The jagged appearance of the hole is probably the root cause of your slow running issue as it's almost certainly petrol residue clogging the jet. Ream it out with some copper wire and job'll be a good 'un wink
