Can you drive a TTR250 on a provisional licence in the UK?

I had a question from an oner that I was embarrassed not to be able to answer but it was the first time I had been asked it!

It is ages ago that my lad took his bike test and in those days you started on a 50cc at 16 years old and took your test on it after which you could drive any bike.

Anyone here know the position for an over 18 yo - can they ride a TTR250 on L plates?

Brian

Brian, UK rules changed in January 2013 and complicated the whole system.

This site shows the current info:- https://www.gov.uk/ride-motorcycle-moped/overview

At the moment the answer to your question is YES, with qualifications. smile

Gone are the old rules on engine capacity, pedal assistance, part 1 and part2, etc. confuse

Sems like the TTR is OK then:

Category A2 medium-sized motorbikes

These are motorbikes, with or without a sidecar not exceeding:

  • 35kW power output
  • 0.2kW/kg power to weight ratio

Category A2 motorbikes can’t be derived from a vehicle of more than double its power.

Think you have to do the A1 licence before you can do the A2.

This is the clearest explanation I can find of how it all works now...

So basically, NO I don't believe you can ride a TTR on L-Plates as the L-Plate limit is 125cc.  The only Caveat to this is that whilst under A2-level instruction you could be riding the TTR with L Plates on, but you can't ride it on your own without the instructor.

The only way you could ride it on L plates is at 19 years of age under the supervision of a qualified instructor before you even get to this stage you would need to complete a cbt on a 125 machine .usually a day course for around 100 pound .you can then move up to the larger bike with a restriction of 35kw .After training and obtaining a theory test pass you can do the two part test this involves a series of manouvers off road on a coned tarmac area pass this then you can take your on road test .Pass obtain an A2 licence enabling you to ride the Ttr on your own .hold this for two years take your A2 and ride what you like.Over 24 do a Direct access course cbt on 125cc do theory test train on a 600cc under instructor supervision, do two part test pass all get cat A licence ride anything you like the same day so long as its taxed insured .
