Wow - wonderful old photos Pug! How did you get them - are they online somewhere?

I have a book of James Ravilious photos called Down the Deep Lanes which really captures the essence of my formative years growing up in rural Cornish/Devonshire back waters.

The Mote Lodge Filling Station, Heavitree - 1920s
1923 Harry Edmunds Courtenay filling station
1939 George William Blanchon motor engineer
1956 Arthur Lionel Underhill filling station.
1967 The Mote Service Station under J S S James
1973 The Mote Service Station
In the early 1930s the garage was a filling station, and the base for an animal transport business. They also offered driver tuition, hired cars and lorries, and let lock up garages.

According to the Heavitree local site that photo is of Fore Street as was in 1905.

Not quite pre-car but they were not all that common.  smile

This is the same road in 1973

Fore%20Street%201973.jpg

The site with the info is:- http://www.heavitreelocalhistorysociety.co.uk/articles.html  and scroll down a few pages.

The first one is:-

Gallows Cross - Heavitree

Devon's place for executions until 1795

The second one is:-

Thorn's Garage, Heavitree 1950s
Thorn's Garage started as a china, ironmonger and cycle agent in the first war. By 1956, John Thorn and Sons were an ironmongers, radio and television engineers and motor engineers, with five Shell pumps between the shop and Fore Street, Heavitree.  The 1967 Kelly's indicates that Thorn's have become Lloyd's Bank. In the 1940s and 50s many people had radios powered by accumulators - they were a glass container, 6 inches square, 9 inches tall, with a carrying handle. Thorn's was a charging point for the batteries costing 4d for a weeks charge and small boys would collect the batteries for their neighbours for a small fee.

That latest one, Martyn, is now the staggered junction of Rifford Road, East Wonford Hill, Sweetbrier Lane and Honiton Road. aww

It was an area prone to flooding due to the Northbrook which rises near Little Gratnor field, Stoke Hill, flows down the valley through Polsloe as the Mincinglake Brook or Whipton Brook, and was locally known as 'The Panny'.

It flowed under the bridge and across the Topsham Road on its way to the Exe. The bridge disappeared when the road between the bridge and Gallows Corner was widened in August 1932. blankstare

That one is:-

The Exeter Garage in Heavitree Road
That photo shows a motorcycle gathering at the Exeter Garage.
The site was previously that of Edward Rogers Thomas & Sons, sculptors.
It  was close to the Exeter Corporation Transport Office and bus depot, which were the sheds for the electric trams up until 1931.
The garage was replaced by the now familiar Pyramids Swimming Pool, which opened in 1941.

I have no idea confuse where that company was situated, despite knowing the area quite well.

Mrs Cubber and I bought lots of interesting lamps, stained glass windows, furniture, rugs, etc. from the Cellars when we moved to Devon.

What was it that Alby Plain was breaking, Brian?

Martyn, the size of a picture really shouldn't exceed the maximum size, in pixles, of the average screen resolution.

Standard sizes of screens range from 800x600 through 1024x768, 1152x864, 1280x768 up to 1680x1050 generally.

I think a picture size of small 640x480, medium 800x600, large 1024x768 is best.

For a hand held device then 240x320 is acceptable but a tad miniscule for a PC.

The last pictures you put on were massive so I resized them to 1024 pixels max. width for easy viewing.

I recall the entrance to where Trev worked was right opposite Treens in Mill St with I think a showroom below. Trev lived in a flat above Treens for a few years.

Just seen your 1950s photo - that's where he worked biggrin
