What more should I change if I replace the Valve Stem Oil Seals?

A simple question. If I open the engine, what more pieces should I change? Including all the gaskets. If somebody can make me a list and where I can find them, it would be good.

I have forgotten for many time this problem in my TTR and probably I should not forget it forever.

If you are just replacing the oil seals I would consider replacing the springs too. wink

You could buy just the stuff needed and get other bits required as you proceed.

First off you would need the seals, rocker gasket and goo for the gasket. smile

Depending on what you break, misplace or find damaged when you get into the job, there may be more to do. confuse

I am biased on sourcing stuff, but for a start I'd go HERE to buy TTR stuff, but there are others out there.

If you are replacing the valve stem oil seals then you will need a head and base gasket set at the very least.

Whilst you have the head off it is probably worth fitting new piston rings if the barrel and piston are still within specification. This is assuming you haven't done this for a while!

Also, check the timing chain and replace if worn.

I forget say, my TTR250 is from 2005. Never I opened the engine, it has few less of 25000 km. It has very good compression but it consumes oil.

If the engine is burning (rather than losing) oil then you definitely need to check the piston/bore for wear.

Does the engine smoke after initial start up? If it still smokes after it has run for a little while, more likely piston/ bore ( minimum new rings) if the barrel and piston are within spec. If it stops smoking after a while, valve stem seals. But then if you are taking it all apart, best to do/ check the whole lot anyway.

I do not see white smoke or other thing. Perhaps it smells a bit more but nothing more. Only in a cold day perhaps I see something but nothing too white.

Can be the oil consume by cross rivers? or perhaps by a high amount of revolutions running. I have a 52 rear sprocket with a 13 front sprocket. I like it but.....I feel how the motorcycle perhaps goes to high of revolutions at all the gears.

Perhaps I can record a video today and show you.

I have not understood badly, by default I would need these.

It is unlikely that worn valve stem oil seals on their own would lead to a noticeable use of oil.

A worn piston or piston rings is the most likely cause of increased oil consumption - assuming no leaks.

It is not always obvious that an engine is burning oil. I recall following a friend on his TTR on a trail ride and, although it wasn't obviously smoking, the smell/fumes were not nice. I soon persuaded him to go behind me instead! He was having to top up his oil each day and eventually had to fit new rings.

I think you will need to grasp the nettle and strip down your engine to check what's going on inside.

In order to determine whether you need to replace the valve springs, the checks in the Workshop Manual are shown below.

I see. Yes probably you have right about how I should check first.

However, at least by the moment, I do not put oil each day and clearly I do not paint with oil the face from my comrades.:) I should calculate how many oil consumes and next to think if it deserves open the cylinder.

I am curious. What oil do you use in the engine? yes, I know how it is descripted in the faq but I am curious because my engine consumes more oil after I start to use CASTROL POWER1 4T 10W40. It is a syntetic and I was thinking if I use a semi-syntetic or mineral, if it can be better.
