Had the pleasure of meeting Andy today and taking him for a little starter run into the very wet an muddy mid Devon lanes. [Round of applause for the chap - he did real well for a off road starter] I was kind of shocked just how wet it is we had rain most of the night an the going was very thick mud i cant remember seeing some of the lanes that wet hears a couple of pic's but i will edit up a vid tonight hope you enjoyed yourself Andy.
Yep we kept it to the easy stuff for him we did not want to put him off He's had the starter run so next time this way it's the full horror show. steep polished rock climbs/climbs with rock steps/ deep water/very deep ruts/ an a 30 yard 18 inch deep crossing of unseen slurry **** filled ruts at the back of a farm that make my ass pucker up every time I cross it thinking of fall in it now sends a shiver down my back.
Now I know why y'all call them "green lanes" now. Running in that much rutted mud is a workout isn't it Andy! Most rookies would have been covered in mud on their first yards of trails that muddy, heck I recon even a experienced rider could come back with couple pounds of muck on them. You aught to be proud to survive still looking as bright as you did. Are you sure it's your second trip?? ...If you lived thru the 1970's maybe you just don't remember :)
Noticed all the hunters you passed have SXS or OU guns they were packing. I didn't see any game hanging from their backs, so what were they hunting for, do you have any idea?
Good stuff guys -Thanks for sharing!
Don't no what they was shooting probably pheasants but I come across a lot of deer on the lanes have chased them up a lane lots of times an as for rabbits I know one lane what's like bunny central hundreds on the bloody things. Andy did well in the mud had to just lay the bike down a time or two but got to see how hard it is to pick up in thick mud an get it on the move again. I think he's planning a long trip on big bike's for next year with some off road an want's to get his off road skill's up to scratch for it. I've picked up big ADV stuff off road in mud an sand give me the light TTr any time would have no problem taking one on a long trip if off road was needed as well if it was just the black stuff an some tracks then a Honda c90 would be the weapon of choice
Sounds like a good day out lads. Even the boring lanes round here (Somerset) are interesting at the moment, wot with the very soft going. Done my shoulder in on Christmas Day riding the tamest Lane I've ridden loads of times. Typical. Still working and riding (road), hopefully join you soon. Cheers. Mark
