i was changing the oil and found the bike had a washable metal mesh oil filter, i had the wrong filter sent so cleaned it and stuck it back in, are these any good? I can see the benefits for touring where you only need to find oil but i would thinkna standard filter would catch smaller particles
Yes you are perfectly correct the old style paper filters do catch more particulats but offer a more restricted oil flow the mesh offer better oil flow not a bad combination on an air cooled engine although my opinion is not in favour of one over the other and is down to personal preference im sure other members on here will have there opinions too .I also run an oil cooler which is an added bonus giving slightly more capacity and I think a worthwhile addition.

I use paper......Anything high flow has t have big holes somewhere....
I also won't use K&N or DNA style air filters for the same reason "oiled foam only"
