It's still solid enough to be cleaned up fortunately. Only problem is a cracked off weld, pictured, which I can fix when I can get hold of a welder. I'm really just wondering whether I should try and polish it up or maybe coat it once I've sanded it back.
Is the header stainless steel underneath the crud? If so it's probably a Totally TTRs one as the CRD version didn't have the fixings for the exhaust guard.
The quickest way to clean up a stainless pipe is to use brick acid - honestly
Regarding the exhaust itself, best to give it a good wire brush before welding just to check that it hasn't rusted through elsewhere.
Hi Brian, thanks for the reply. No it's mild steel, by the looks, from the exhaust port until the bend just after the battery box. I think it might actually be a bit of a 'chop and change' now that I have looked at it a bit closer. I'll post some more pics to explain what I'm talking about.
Also, yes I will wire brush the whole pipe regardless.
I think you might be right regarding the exhaust system, I think it is stainless steel like you suggested. I am still surprised as I've never seen stainless steel in this sort of condition.
There are several different types of stainless steels. The two main types are austenitic and ferritic, each of which exhibits a different atomic arrangement. Due to this difference, ferritic stainless steels are generally magnetic while austenitic stainless steels usually are not.
Lol, very sorry, nelly. I appreciate the reply. I actually tested my exhaust with a magnetic screwdriver. My reply to you was just a copy and paste from a Google search, sorry if I sounded rude.
Sooo.... While I'm at it..... I spent five solid hours rubbing back the rust from my stainless steel exhaust. Stripped-down the back part of the frame so I could check for rust and clean up and cover the wiring. I'm glad I did because there was some rust that was starting to take hold - well if it had been left any longer. So I have hit it all with a flap disk on the grinder and am about to spray etch primer, tap the threads of the nuts in the frame so that they are all good. Then wire it back up.
