I realise this is the reverse to the usual 'upgrade', but does anyone know what the rating of standard weight fork springs is?
I've got heavier ones fitted, and as I get older and thus even slower, I need to go back to standard. I'll also be working in some rocky country next year, so plush is very good.
As an aside, my honourable old TTR with mid-70k accumulated (original motor except for stator, starter motors and starter clutch, and camchain and tensioner), was taken out for what I thought was going to be an easy ride. Wrong. It was 42degC shade temp, and the poor old bike was flogged through scrub, endless sticks and sandhills for at least two hours cross-country. Then it was back to the homestead over sand dunes on a cleared track. 60km of abuse, 11 years old, handled it like the champ it is.
I have a 2000 TTR which I uprated the forks some years ago. I believe the standard rates were 0.41kg/mm for blue TTRs and 0.38kg/mm for white steel tank TTRs. I went to 0.46kg/mm and 7.5 weight oil as the amount of fork dive was annoying and this rate was recommended by Ballard's here in Australia who were very experienced with TTR's in the 90's. 0.46 was excellent for my riding weight although was rather firm and not as compliant in the tight stuff like what you mentioned. If I did it again I would probably go to 0.44-0.45kg/mm. For reference, I weigh about 85kg plus gear.
