Drowning my bike
Permalink

Thought I'd post about drowning my bike a few months ago.

These bikes must be tough. Dropped my bike in a massive mud hole, got the front and rear wheels in different ruts and over we went. I'm the kind of person that takes all the tools/spares on a ride and am fairly fussy with my bike maintenance. I am usually the one saying hey don't start your bike I think it went under, better check the airbox.

Well this day we were running late (to get to the pub for lunch!!) and I was in a rush to get out of the hole and for whatever reason didn't even think to check the airbox. I been through some deep holes and dropped it in a few so I've checked the airbox a few times in the last 2 years!.

Got the bike up, started straight away and off we went. Stopped about 1min later as gears weren't changing as smoothly as usual. Checked the gear lever, hmm all looked good. Strange, felt like it used too before I put engine flush through it. Anyway rode on for the rest of the day about 60klm of very hard riding, lifting bikes over logs etc etc.

Got home the next day washed the bike. Due to the drop thought I'll take the seat off and plastics this time and give it a proper clean. Long story short looked down to check the airfilter $%&@$ the airbox was at least half full of black muddy water. What an idiot, I've checked the airbox in circumstances far less likely to get water in.

The airfilter was covered in wet mud 5-10mm thick over the whole filter. It was obviously wringing wet. Took the cover off the airbox and out came all the water. Far out, it ran like a dream all day. Apart from gear changes a little notchy. So, absolutely knackered after a massive weekend, stripped the carby, was fairly clean, dropped the oil, just a hint of water....maybe its not so bad.

Oil filter clogged with mud/silt and debris (very fine). Did 8 oil changes and 15min rides in between each one. I reckon 3 or 4 was enough but wanted to be sure until not a hint of debris was collecting on the oil filter. Added engine flush every second change

The bike has since never run better. Done 1000klm since. Can't notice any difference. Time will tell hey. Maybe it will do 20,000klms less than it may have before, I have no idea. makes me love the bike even more and sure makes for a good story when it is still going at 40,000k

Currently sitting on 17,500klms. Uses no oil. No smoke, runs perfectly.

There was a little debris on the inside of the filter - but very little considering how much was on the outside! Should have taken photos but I was too panic stricken.

Video of the day below, mud hole towards the end.
