Clutch side engine cover

Hi Guys,

Drowned my bike a little while back, did lots of oil changes and its running fine. Quite a bit of dirt etc got into the motor, most trapped by the filter, nothing 8 oil changes couldn't fix!

Runs like a charm however I realise there is also a mesh screen near the oil pump. I am thinking I should take the engine cover off to remove and clean it. Maybe thats overkill?

Done 1000klms since then so oil must be getting through (comes out of the check bolt above the oil filter when undone), I just want to be sure the oil flow has not been restricted.

Aside from taking the kickstarter lever off, and all the allen bolts, is there anything tricky to removing the cover?

Cheers Leigh

Could be worth cleaning. Mine was 50% + covered in sludge with less than 4000 miles. It's an easy job but best to make sure you have a new gasket just incase. there's also the banjo bolt to remove so i renewed the copper washers. An easy hours work..

Thats interesting Locky.

Its definitely worth cleaning then. I did an oil pressure check last night. Seems to be plenty of oil going through. I read the manual briefly before going to do that job. I notice it says in the manual to remove the check bolt when checking the oil flow at idle. Normally I just crack the bolt a few turns and oil dribbles out.

Soooo took the bolt out and hit the starter tentatively...haha....no oil thought ok maybe it wont be too bad. Started the bike and let it idle. Oil sunami! what a mess. Its was pouring out of that hole like a river. Put the bolt back in one turn and started it again, oil was pouring out so I am sure I must have good oil pressure.

I will definitely do this job at some point however, maybe if/when clutch needs attention or another reason to take it off. I am kinda if its not broken don't fix it.

Do you need to remove the header pipe? Or can you get the banjo bolt out without removing it?

Cheers Leigh

Fraid so - bit of a design fault I reckon no

You may be able to loosen the header pipe enough to move it sufficiently to get the banjo bolt out if you are really lucky.
