Occasional engine knocking - Help
Permalink

I have a 2000 TTR-250, and I have an engine knocking sound that seems to have come up on occasion over the last year or so. I haven't been riding much for the past year, but whenever I ride, I always hear this engine knocking sound that I can't seem to diagnose.  The closest thing I can relate to the sound is something like someone clicking their tongue very loudly and sharply. Sometimes it'll happen 2 or 3 times within a minute, and sometimes I can go for an hour and never hear it.  I can't seem to pinpoint a consistent facot which is making it happen, other than it seems to happen most frequently when it is cold, and when it is idling, or right after i let off the throttle.  I've had it once or twice where it'll actually stall the engine if its idling, so I know it's engine related, but I can't figure out what.  Nothing replaced on the engine as far as I know, but its never given me any problems till now.  Just looking for someone who might know what it is or anyone who's having the same problem.  I'll post a video of the sound when I can get it to do it on camera, but for now it's camera shy.

Yeah get the sound on, a knock is not always necessarily crank/conrod/bearings related.

Im sorry its hard to hear, but this is the only time ive gotten it to happen on camera. i put a little more description in the video, but really the closest thing it sounds like is someone clicking their tongue extremely loudly, or like a small rock hitting a piece of plastic. youtu.be/UGork8ZAyf4 Go to 0:45 and let me know if you guys have any ideas or help, thanks in advance.

Well, upon inspection of the carb, the carbuerator joint( that little rubber joint between the engine and the carbuerator) was somewhat loose on the engine side and so we decided to replace it. It seems like this may have actually fixed it, which means it was probably the mixture being too leaned out by the extra air intake causing a backfire which was extra loud due to the fact that the engine wasnt completely sealed as it should be. Took a 3 day trip and I didnt hear the pop at all during the trip. I had another issue with the bike no longer sparking, but thats a story for another thread. My original issue however seems to be resolved with the problem being a loud engine ping from too lean of a mixture but now that the carbuerator joint is replaced, it seems to be fixed. Thanks for the help and ill let you guys know if it comes back or changes at all. Thanks for the suggestoions.
