I have seen a few threads on trying to track down an annoying engine ticking noise. One poster rebuilt the engine a few times before giving up!
I have rebuilt and run my engine for a year now with an annoying ticking noise, so I don't think it's terminal. I have done a rebore with new piston, new cam chain, new tensioner and new valves. Valve clearances are at the tighter end of the spec.
I cannot work out what is causing the noise. It seams to be quietest just after starting from cold when oil pressure is made.
No one seams to have looked into this as being the problem. I can't feel any play in the cams but am assuming the noise is from them.
anyone have any other ideas where to look?
Will do some measuring comparing to yamaha specs and keep you posted as I'm not the only one with this problem.
I had the same on my 325. I was on a ride with a fellow forum member who advised going up a size on each of the exhaust shims and that did the trick. Still a slight ticking as to be expected but not the noise I had before. I think I am just outside of spec. but have put a lot of miles on since then and no apparent problems. I guess its just different on some engines.
Mines had a slight tick since I had the top end off to do the valve seals etc. I set the clearances to the wider end of the spec. It runs well and I only hear the tick if I listen for it.
