Finished work yesterday and tried to start the bike to go home and it wouldn't. On the button it just made a small click (and with the bike in gear it didn't do this so I would think the button itself is fine), and I couldn't even kick the bike into life. In the end I bumped it and it bumped first time.

When I go home I tried again and had exactly the same problem. However strangely after giving up and putting the bike on the side stand out of gear it started first time on the button and would kick over!

The starting problem has happened before, but only literally a few times of pressing the button and getting the click before it started, never this bad.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a dodgy lecky connection to me mate. Maybe get the tank and seat off and have a look for cruddy jionts?

It could of just kicked over nicely because it was warm by the time you got home, maybe check the side stand switch? If you had not of mentioned the side stand I would of just said it was maybe a battery or charging issue...

Did the starter relay only click once? If so this could possibly indicate a issue with the starter motor...

Sorry to hear of the problems Nigel cry

There are a limited number of things that can go wrong:

Starter switch - easy enough to split and make sure no foreign matter floating around inside that might interfere with the contacts, a quick emery of the contacts, a squirt of contact cleaner and put it back together and test.

Solenoid - the only real way to test if it is at fault is to short it out, thus bypassing both it and the starter switch, and see if the engine turns over. If it does then the solenoid has likely failed. See here

Starter motor brushes - a few owners have had issues with brushes sticking. If you short out the solenoid and the starter doesn't turn then the brushes are the prime suspects. See here

This assumes that your battery is good and the connections are clean and also good.
