Why choose a TTR250 over other dirtbikes?

I was asked this morning what the benefits of the TTR250 are over other 250s.

These are my thoughts in no particular order. What have I missed?

  1.  six-speed box with a nice top gear for road use
  2.  most parts are available next day
  3.  good range of "extras"
  4.  good selection of sprockets to get the gearing exactly as you want it
  5.  nice simple air-cooled engine making it a bike that a half-capable owner can do virtually any repair on themselves
  6. great forum with "how to"s for just about every job
  7. over-engineered Yamaha quality
  8. economical on petrol
  9. easy on the running gear
  10. good turn of speed if you ride it with the revs at the top end

I would support that Brian. The only downside is the headlight which is quite poor on unlit roads.

I chose my TTR in preference to other dirtbikes because of:-

  • its availability
  • at the right price
  • from a local source
  • with the added advantage of a very good spares supply
  • and good servicing information.

The added bonus, after a few months of ownership, was this dedicated forum and membersbiggrin

When I was looking for a "trailie" it was between the TTR and the CRM. Both similar prices but as Martyn it came down to availability. Ownership hasn't been plain sailing but that is down to previous owners not the bike. What I like about this wee bike is I can work on it with a degree of confidence unlike my Aprilia. What has helped also is this forum and it's members who have all been very helpful, especially Brian, so a big thanks to everyone who has helped me over the last year.

Cubber what do you mean by its "availability" ? i think they are getting hard to find.

I went for a TTR because .

1. Yamaha reliability.

2. Simple engine with carb.

3. I found a good spares supplier and spares are a good price (young Brian)biggrin

4. Very cheap to run and service.

5. 6 speed box.

Ah, what Indeed???? confuseconfuseconfuse

When I decided to change from my Tiger Cub to a more modern bike I looked longingly at an offer made on a TRF forum.

That forum happened to be the local Devon TRF forum, where I espied a "For Sale" advertisement.

I drooled at the picture and was envious.  evileye

Within a fiew days I was hooked.

It was for a restored TTR.

It was in AS NEW condition. aww

It was very close to my location, like within spitting distance. smile

I bought it from Mr TTR and collected it on the day I drew the cash from the bank.

So, you see, it was AVAILABLE - and I took advantage of the availability.

There have been quite a few more "available" from the same restorer - ALL to an extremely high standard and ALL reasonably priced.

I wanted a bike I could enjoy working on as well as riding. Good resale value and comparatively lightweight for a dual-sport. I think Honda have the badge for jap build quality & reliability so the TTR is truly a one-off for Yamaha.

TTR 250
1/ old school easy to work on
2/ air cooled
3/ nice seat /most new Enduro bikes seem to lack a nice seat now
4/good range on the fuel tank
5/it don't need a service top end rebuild every 40 hours of run time like a Ktm

the TTR was built to compete with the Honda 250 Xr at the time an this it did very well they are a near match in the mud and I know as I have both the only thing the XR win's on is on the older 82-88 model's were physically smaller bikes an handle very like a full on trials bike in the tight bits. I try to ride both an keep the ass on seat time the same for both bikes. think I have had the TTR 6 months now an just over a thousand miles in that time.

After riding my mates TTR, I sold my 1991 Honda XR250. The TTR I found on really rocky trails tracked better and felt more sure footed. Also liked the magic start buttonbiggrin, my old Honda had only kick start.

I love the controllable power of the TTR. We take on a few challenging hill climbs and I've always been wary of keeping the front wheel grounded (had a go on a KTM, popped a wheelie on a flat trail and scared myselfdisbelief - and the TTR seat is way more comfortable). The TTR tractors beautifully up hill climbs, its low down torque is wonderful (although my style isn't, I look like an uncoordinated giraffe padding up hills), sometimes (not often) can out perform those on more spirited bikes.

Also I want a bike that gets me home from some pretty isolated spots, no radiator means less things to go wrong and the engine is a ripper - I want to be riding, not fixing stuff in the bush. Love that I can ride all day on one tank of fuel, KTM and Husky riders always seem to be heading back to the cars at lunchtime to refuel.

Yep, I love my TTR, I call it the thinking person's bikewink.

Quite light at 130kgs for this type of bike... striped out around 110/115kgs...

Able to fit a Rekluse clutch with out any machine work..

Has adjustable suspenion , thow budget but still adjustable..

no 100hr rebuilds..

the only other choices in the 250 air cooled bikes here are

the Suzuki DR250 & older used XR250...

PS...

I'm going to riding it in the SI enduro series this coming year on the TTR....

As I just bought my 13yo a Honda CRF150F..He wants to ride in

enduro events.... lucky the novices 13 -16 & Veterans ride the same course...

Veteran..really don't like the sound of that...

I've had my TTR250 for 2 years and have thought about changing it for a hotter bike but when I'm back on it on a typical 100mile very muddy day out, I just love it. It just does everything I expect from a trail bike, ok I put a lot of time into the bike to ensure it's reliable - keeping it for a long time yet.
