Life after the TTR

i Love my TTR but there arent alot of them around my home. Two of my buddies are looking for bikes. What bikes are the spiritual successor to the TTR. Is it the WR250R/WR450R? Remember the USA TTR is off road only.

What Id really like to know is what other current bikes are great trail bikes? Including other manufactures. I'm looking for bikes with wide ratio tranny, 100mile gas tanks and electric start.

The WR250R is the natural successor to the TTR in terms of being a true dual purpose bike. Fuel injected, water cooled, 6 gears and very capable on or off road.

However, it hasn't got the simplicity of a TTR e.g. the wiring would look more at home on a small aircraft.

I think they are quite common in the States and have quite a lively following.

Honda's XR and Suzuki's DR might be the most comparable -- simple bikes, easy to ride, often street legal in the US, and they've been around long enough that you can find a lightly-used one for cheap. Yamaha also makes an XR but it's ... weak.

In my experience (Oregon/NorCal) the WR can be as hard to find as the TTR, at least the older models, and the newer models are pricey -- that's how I ended up with the TTR. The WR was supposed to be the performance trail bike, closer to the YZ than to the TT or DT. If you can find a 2003-2007 or so WR250F you might get a good deal on a fast bike (especially if its been "uncorked"). But I never see older WRs for sale out here (Oregon).
