Project Lemon..(update May 2014)

Evening all..aww. So the story started with some mouth breathing pond scum helping themselves to my xr250 and leaving me with a empty garage furious. Got insurance paid out and then spent weeks looking for a suitable replacement, out on my travels and found a TTR that the owner was putting on ebay that evening..with hindsight, i should have done a bit of research into these bikes and what goes wrong with them but after being bikeless for too long, i took it off the chaps hands..blankstare

The lemon..

Due to a busy time, the ttr got put away before i managed to have a proper look at things..spent some time online in the evenings researching ttr faults and problems and sure enough, mine has got the dreaded sprag 'clunk' no. Just to confirm things, i invited Mr.Sussex of this parish around for a brew and a chat. Unfortunately, by the time the man came round to confirm my sprag misery, the starter had packed up as well..furious. Still good to meet the Guru though and got some useful pointers from the man himself aww.

So now the lemon is a slightly longer term project as im slowly gathering funds for the sprag and starter..furious.

Lack of funds hasnt stopped me from stripping and cleaning things though and the ttr has shed about a kilo or more of mud,sh1te and oily gunge so far.

Looks like you are rising to the challenge Jason!

Thanks for the brew and good to have a chat. Hope I didn't leave you feeling too depressed.

And, yes, the sprocket boss should face inwards. 2nd TTR I have seen with that fault recently no

Good luck and we are happy to help with any questions that arise biggrin

Gave the battery a good charge just in case that was the reason for the starter woes, still no dice, just clicking. Worth giving the relay a look at..? Easy to get at now, battery box is out and revealing the state of the shock..doh

Hi Jason

Good luck with your bike, get a wiggle on and you would be more than welcome to join a TTR ride out on the 16th of august, see the ride out section. Also have a look at the cheap starter repair stickie thing, I done mine cheap at the second attemptwinkwinkwink Worth a read, as a few of us have come to a good alternative to buying new! Mine has been as good as gold for quite a while now!

Are you sure the battery is OK? as mine done the clicky thing, even when it seemed fully charged, changed the battery and all is good. Just a thought, sure someone with more techy knowledge will be able to tell you how to test the battery.

The battery looks fairly new, whopped it on my optimate4 charger and it said it was ok, only charged it for about 4 hours though. Might give it a coupla days on charge and then see what it does.

Yep - you have identified the solenoid correctly!

A quick way to check if its the solenoid that's faulty is to short across the terminals with something fairly solid and metallic! If the starter then turns over its most likely the solenoid or the connections to it.

If it helps, you are more than welcome to try one of my spares.

Brian

They are on all the TTR frames and their only purpose, I think, is to stop the cable tie from slipping down the frame.

Thats about it for now, next job is to sort the starter issues and get the sprag sorted. Might have a crack at polishing the header if i get some time this week, also got two bolts to sort with rounded heads, one on the rh frame guard and one of the three bolts on the starter cover..hey ho.

It's a one way valve on one of the carb breathers. There should be one on each side on the down line from the T at the carb.

The only way I have found to clean a blocked one easily is to soak it overnight (soapy water fine) and then blow through with the airline. Rinse a few times and you should only be able to blow through it - not suck.

I think the screwdriver may have done for it but give it a clean and see if it still works wink

I recommend replacing the starter cover bolts with small-head (standard size heads look wrong somehow) hex-headed bolts. Makes life soooo much easier wink

Evening all..good news and bad news from project lemon this evening..hmm

Following advice from Brian, i have found the cause of my starter woes..culprit below.

20140731_194120.jpg

Seen a few on evilbay but is there anywhere else anyone knows about to get a new one..?

So, had the ttr running for a while tonight and the bad news is that the sprag hasnt miraculously self-healed itself and it still sounds like a mixer full of spanners. no  Also, the engine wont just tick over nicely, probably just needs a new plug, some fresh fuel and a bit of carb tickling.

The TTR starter relay is part # 3SX-81940-00 but, although it hasn't got a 4GY reference, it seems to be specific to the TTR. New is £43.65 plus VAT retail no

I have looked through the Hi-Level catalogue and can't see one similar but ORO seem to have something - see pic below. £12 apiece if you are willing to take a chance?

Just been looking at the photos and your lemon is a Japanese import, blue ttr with purple wheels, digital Speedo. They get the grease nipple on the swinging arm spindle,  I don't think the other blue versions do?

I bought one myself to see what it looked like. It is slightly bigger diameter than the original but the rubber surround fits straight onto the TTR mount and, if the cable clamp is bent straight, the solenoid will fit in exactly the right position.

You are welcome to try it out if you want Jason?

Brian
