Recognise a few names from the TRF forum, used to have a lovely little xr250 until some mouth breathing pond scum borrowed it from my garage..didnt want to spend too long without a 'laner, so grabbed a ttr that i saw parked up while on my work travels. Previous owner was about to stick it on evilbay, so saved him the trouble. Turns out that it needs a bit of fettling before it hits the lanes again..got the dreaded knock when the ignition is killed, which i assume is the sprag..? And now the starter is playing up, just a non-satisfying click coming from it...!

So i have a project on my hands..confuse No doubt i will have many many questions in the future..!!

Cheers all, look forward to chatting. Mogwai.

Good Morning Mogwai (it's 12:59 AM here in Aussie land) and welcome to the forum :handshake

The clunk could most certainly be that the sprag clutch needs replacing, however, a few people have unnecessarily worried themselves. If it is not loud and more of a clicking sound, it's should be alright. If in doubt though, replacing is the best option rather than placing more wear on the pinion gear etc..

The stater issure could be due to a few things, the first one to check is the start switch IMO. More info on this HERE.

The other possible causes in order are-

Loose battery leads.

Bad earth.

Starter relay.

Starter motor brushes.

Wiring harness.

Armature came a drift from the housing (usually only with non-genuine motors).

If I have forgotten to add any possible causes, I'm sure someone will be along soon to add to it.

Good luck!

Jarrah

Cheers for the reply Jarrah ! *shakes hand* smile

Definitely a clunk rather than a click..! As for the starter, the relay is just clicking.

 No problems Mogwai thumbsup.gif

Sounds like you need to replace the sprag, Brian has an excellent guide HERE.

Yeah, I did read the clicking part. All of the above applies.

Here is a link to familiarize with posting pictures and link (if needed) HERE.

Hope you enjoy your time on the forum.

Jarrah

p.s. if you need a manual PM me your email address and I will send you the full comprehensive PDF version.

No problems Mogwai.

You may want to check out this link for cleaning the starter switch HERE.

Oh, I seem to have forgotten one of the most important possible causes- flat battery.

Enjoy!

Jarrah

Welcome to the forum, Jason.

The name Mogwai seems familiar, are you on the Cornish, Tamar or Dorset TRF forums? confuse

If you require spares or goodies for your machine then you're in the right place here.

Ah yes, I remember reading of your exploits on the DGTRF forum some while ago. Splendid, sir, simply splendid.

I was unaware, at the time, that you were such a spiffing fellow and TTR mounted to boot. aww
