Prepping TTR for the Vince
Permalink

Hi all.

Just thought I'd put up a few pics of the mods I've done to get down to the Vince orienteering thing this year.

So far I've done. Bigger petrol tank, rear luggage rack, front luggage rack, gas mask bag with interior velcro pocket for wine bottle, spotlight to help out the ****ty moped headlight, wider kickstand foot, odd home-made basket thing to put petrol stove in to prevent unleaded odour in spare pants and fitted a USB charger. I've also decided I'm going to run a 14 front sprocket for the trundle down there and then change it back to the 13 for the event. I've managed to shrink the breaker bar down by getting a short Halfords one and a length of metal bar as an extension sleeve. That, and the sprocket and the 30mm socket don't have place of residence yet but the bar, at least, fits between the rails of the rear rack.

Whole bike

Front rack

Rear rack and stove basket

Any Q's, let me know.

Andy

Excellent work Andy!

Brave move swapping front sprockets away from home wink

Was the TTR a good choice for the Vince?

Also, did you meet Robin Webb on his TTR325?

Brian

Hi Raggis.

I used this from Adventure Spec. Not cheap, but it is good. I'd had it waiting to go on a bike that got nicked for a while. Not sure how it measures up to the new e-bay cheapies.

I'm going to the Vince too, but not riding there, we're taking the trailer for our pair of steeds. If you'd like me to put a 30mm socket and my 2ft breaker bar in the truck it might make changing the sprocket easier if you get stuck with your mobile kit.

Nice work, although if you need the usb charger and lights during the event you're doing a couple of things wrongconfuse

Looking at the map, I think you'll probly get away with a 14 cog this year. There were no nadgery-trail warnings in the paperwork this year, as there have been the last 2, and the trails look nice and flowing. I did overhear Austin tell someone at the Telford bike show that this year's routes would suit bigger bikes, although that may have been because he was pushing the event to a bloke in head to toe Beemer gear...

I would give some serious thought to hydration. Think it's gonna be a hot one this time. For me, A Halfords 1.5litre water bag cabletied to the front mudguard and bottles on the back rack, plus the occasional gaseosa-stop where possible.

Brian, if you remember last year's VINCE was won by 2 TTRs... biggrin

Safe trip. What ferry are you on?

Simon.

Brian,
The TTR is bleedin' perfect for the Vince. The only slight downer is the blat through France. Hence the 14 tooth cog. Hopefully not too brave.

Padowan. Will see you there. Please do pack such bits, but can I be sure your van will make it??? And as you point out as well, the TTR is very well suited. Have you had a spin round on Google earth yet. It does look fairly pointy.

Simon. I'm not keen on using a 14 all the time as it is bleedin' high up this time. He's saying pack warm clothes for the upland stuff. The lamp and the USB charger are for the trip down. French countryside gets very dark and my earplug headphones will be pretty much permanently worn as 50/60 mph for hours on end will need a fully charged musical distraction.

I'm crossing to St Malo and will try and meet up with team mate. He's on a bigger KTM so he may not want to bumble all the way. I will definitely be carrying water. Last year was a sweat fest and this year it's July!

Pete. The rack is from a 90's TTR I think. So it's Yamaha but not for that model but I only had to clip a tiny bit of the tailpiece to get it all in place. They do come up on e-bay but they are pretty rare. That's where I got that one.

I'm getting excited now. Must go and finish my map.

Andy

What are people's thoughts on tyres for the trails in the Pyrenees? We've got MT43's on the rear and Mich Comp 4s on the front, wondering if a more aggro rear could be beneficial or perhaps a Trelleborg army as something in between...

Btw. I'm also a Simon, there seems to be a lot of us going from the attendee list names!

MT43's good off road tire for lot's of road work the Trelleborg army will do a better job off road but it's not going to last as long as the MT 43 will on the road. have used the army for years on me xr an with hard road work have had as little as 900 - 1000 miles on one. before putting a new one on as it's lost it's way in the mud. but I like them so have one on the back XR an the TTR at this time an ran one on my F650 Dakar before I sold it so it's a thumb's up from me.

Simon.

They'll be fine. Anything knobbly should be fine. It's mostly dry stones and rocks, the odd sandy/shaley bit and about two puddles. In fact, you would probably be not too far off with those dual style things but I wouldn't bother unless you already had them and preferred to spend the money on beer. I have TKC 80s but I do loads of tarmac and they're very good on that and last ok for a knobbly, maybe not the case on something a bit more roughty than the TTR though.

I can't wait. We're driving down to Camprodon (the other side of Andorra and miles away from this years map) for a week or so before hand and then coming back for the Vince, so we'll get 2 weeks of Pyrenean adventure, with the event thrown in for good measure at the end.
