Hi Wil

It can't have been that long ago that you fitted a new sprag clutch?

Brian i did not fit a new sprag clutch i sent it back to you if you remember  because my mechanic told me it was the idler gear and starter motor that had seen better days it did clunk before occasionally just as it is now and i wondered mif this was normal.

If you haven't checked out THIS THREAD already, it may be worth doing so.

Sometimes they do clunk more than others, better to let the engine dies to a slow idle before shutting it off.

Hope that helps?

Jarrah

Anyone tried PartsShark for Yamaha bits here? It's my preferred source.

Yeah, it has been mentioned on here before Agman, my favorite is partzilla.com.

Oh you must be using Firefox? the link didn't work. You'll have to create a named link like I have to in Firefox. Click HERE and scroll down to my posts for more info on the issue and HERE for instructions on naming links.

Sorry Wil - I had forgotten that - more haste less speed disbelief

There was the occasional clunk on shut down from the TTR I just refurbished. As it will be for sale in due course, I couldn't ignore it as I would hate for a new owner to end up possibly needing a new starter and starter gears.

I just replaced the sprag and it took less than an hour including stopping for a long chat about bikes with the postman!

It now shuts down with a nice click biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

My own policy is that if there is any doubt, its worth renewing the sprag.

not doubting the mechanics word but what caused the damage to these components ? did he remove the flywheel and check the condition of the sprag ? if not then you are heading for the same problem causing damage to starter pinion and corresponding gears again as the sprag may not be operating correctly .I would agree with Brian and as a matter of course replaced it . My own TTR was very much the same and I replaced the sprag and idler starter gear and starter the main culprit was the sprag causing the damage to everything else a loud clonk on shutdown was replaced with a nice gentle click
