Tab Washers

Can anybody please tell me if the tab washer in the speedo drive of the blue 04's should be flat. My speedo's not working and the problem is in the drive somewhere. The tab washer's seem to face uphill. The three of them.

Many thanks.

Have you tried TotallyTTRs.com?

"A common failure in the speedo drive unit is for the 3-tab washer to oval out and slip losing drive to the cable. This is usually caused by some grit jamming up the worm gears in the drive unit.

Yamaha no longer sell the tabs individually and the alternative, until now, was a complete new speedo drive unit at over £140.

We have had some new washers laser cut out of stainless steel and there is a very good chance that they will provide a long-term fix as long as the drive unit is thoroughly cleaned and the worm gears run smoothly.

If your plain washers are badly worn then we can supply genuine new Yamaha washers at an additional £1 each.

£6.50 plus p&p.  Grab yourself a bargain!

PS if the worm gears are damaged then genuine new Yamaha speedo drives are now available here"

Hi Ian

The tab washer should be flat. Also there is only one tab washer (and two plain washers) in the drive.

Replacement tab washers available here - thank you for the heads up Martyn biggrin

Cheers

Brian

The tabs on the washer locate on matching tabs on the wheel hub.

The s/s tab washer is very strong and it must have taken a lot of force to bend the tabs!

Try straightening them BUT before putting it all back together make sure that the drive gear housing is cleaned out really well and make sure the worm drive (and speedo cable) is turning freely. The usual cause of the tab washer rounding is a bit of grit finding its way into and jamming the worm gear.

Good luck!

Brian

hi brian, ive straightened the washer out and put it back together and it works, i think the only way i would have bent it is when i had the wheel off to put a new tyre on and not put it back on properly but that was a year ago. very strange. ian

If there is no thrust washers installed I would be buying them asap before it grinds the speedo drive housing.

Probably half the problem as the washers also keep the drive gear on there straight and in line with the worm gear .

I had the same problem when I first got my TTR, the speedo wasn't working all the time, it came and went, so I pulled the drive apart, hammered the washer flat, cleaned and then filled the drive housing with CV grease, also cleaned and greased the drive cable, the problem is if your not careful to line up the tabs with the wheel they get bent

Easy fix on mine at least, hasn't been a problem ever since biggrin
