After many dusty days IT RAINED, and is still raining today. Grandson's KTM had several $ of parts and hours put Here is the only picture I took of our 3 hours out Saturday morning, sorry
Should have taken a before, but figure there are enough of those round here. Note the mud still hanging on in places (EXCITING for us to see rain). I had just rough cleaned the fins and pipe and snapped this. I spent all day today cleaning up so we can do it again tomorrow as it was actually raining today and too soggy to load the trailer for the 15 minute ride to Twin Buttes Lake where we (grandson & I) played in the mud for the first time in +- 2 years. Of the 3 lakes in our area 1 is bone dry, and the other 2 are almost gone. Just behind my bike (pipe fence) is the top of a boat ramp where I have put in Large boats in the 70's-80's, but now it's all ATV trails
Martyn, You are right. Josh loves this stuff more than I ever expected. I figure it will cost me big $ to keep him in future bikes. He is already looking to move up from the ktm that he just now rides well. I bet he said Thank you 15x yesterday. We take nothing for granted. I'm just glad he got to ride in the mud before he starts shaving- & Bryan, The drought here is very bad, but I do live at the edge of the desert. I'm 52 next month and never remember it being this dry. I think as of last week we've only around 3-4 inches this year. Almost no rain last year. About 2 years ago O.C. Fisher Lake (my favorite) went completely dry. We are expected to run out of water inside of a year unless we can get SIGNIFICANT rain. We ride (pic) at Twin Buttes Lake where there are several miles of trails today where I used to bass/crappie fish. My boat now sits outside with no place to go (It's for sale if anyone is interested).
Twin Buttes is upstream and connected to Lake Nasworthy by a dam and is the backup water source for our main (Nasworthy) lake for our city. We have had to cancel the Boat races this year at Lake Nasworthy. They race over 200 MPH, but not in 2 ft of water we have in some spots. Currently we are under lawn watering restrictions (1X every 2 weeks) with no outside watering during afternoon. There are fines for abusers. Last week I rode the Harley around Nasworthy and thought I was gonna cry.
We are in need of rain, so when I walked out this a.m. to load bikes (6:30) it was lightning. Winds are up and clouds are dark and scary. Might have to put off riding again today if this don't stop. If we go I will be sure to get some pics to post.
Looking for a video camera so I can show everyone how blessed we are with places to ride.
wow Greg thats amazing no rain for that long and dry lakes not so good .My daughter just retuened from vacation in your state she was in schertz loved every minute of her stay dont know how far from you but I know it was very warm for time of year she was quite blue when she returned to uk and the rain man your grandson would love uk mud I think. If we get no rain in the uk for a month the water companies would panic and declare a drought and ban hosepipes.I think your going to need a bit more before you get to go bass fishin again!
When the clouds and lightning stopped around noon, we loaded up for another layer of mud. Here is the "before" picture. Can't believe he forgot his gloves
After 10 minutes, the "during" picture with THE Twin Buttes in the background for good measure (see all the purdy yellow flowers in the background? stay tuned...) We had to stop because he couldn't see. Notice the mud on his head! I'm sooo proud!
Here is a shot of the lake today. There is a dam on the horizon we are riding to, about 2 miles away. 15 years ago, water was almost up to where I am taking this pic
Here is an exit to the one-way trails. "W" means wrong-way and is marked along the many miles of trails (EXCEPT where it isn't) This is always a problem because these markers and the simple arrow markers along the way are sometimes down ...and then it gets scary
Also as an added bonus, it you venture too far off the trails you get to pick stickers out ya' arse
This is a typical low spot along the plethora of trails. Usually dry, with a couple inches rain in the last few days... We tore this lil' puddle UP after this picture
Since I'm in Texas, thought it would be a crime not to show some of the locals. Not a very good picture, but here's a herd of cattle with lake in background
Here is the flood gate from Twin Buttes to Nasworthy (locally know as 'the cage'). Notice the black line on the concrete where the water level HAD been some years back.
Met a guy when I took this picture that said Twin Buttes came up 7 feet in the last few days. Too bad it is still 30 feet low.
Here are a couple more shots looking south
Here is a shot looking west. Normal water levels are just below the trucks on right side of pic
Just another shot that looks almost directly back to where the first pic (start of thread) is, 2 miles to the WNW.
Now a couple fun shots of Josh taking a dip
Here's the aftermath of Memorial day in Texas. Notice the professional application of blue tape to protect my purdy little TTR
Hey Dominic, Schertz, Tx. is just NE of San Antonio, about 3-4 hours drive from my San Angelo. Humid and hot there as it is here. I hope she gets back for another visit, we love our tourists. Hope she went to the Alamo and River walk in downtown San Antonio, as it is only a short drive. If she didn't eat our Mexican food she needs to come back!
BTW-some of these shots were taken with an old camera I used until I got this new phone/camera. Found some shots of practice day at Spring Valley Motocross race track in Clyde, Texas. Forgot they were on there. All of Josh flying thru the air on our trip up there last summer. I plan on going thru them and posting soon if anyone is interested.
Hope you enjoyed viewing as much as we did making.
Great stuff Greg - loved looking through the pics. The furthest we got south on our US road trip last year was Kansas and it looked pretty dry there as well.
It's really nice to see where other owners ride. We have had some nice picture shows from Russia, Australia, France, Scotland, Phillipines, England and Spain plus others over the years.
It would be good to see more though so step up you other guys but start your own thread with, preferably, your country in the heading
I know we have a customer in Western Samoa so some pics from there would be especially interesting
The top picture must have been taken in the recent weeks. It is at a place not to hard to drive a car to. Gives me a little smile to see the difference. WOW! Thanks for "sewing" the pictures together, wish I could have done it. I'm way behind in electronic camera tech. I learned on a Pentax "spotmatic"(k100) that used actual film you could touch. I need to get one of these newfangeled little camera's mounted on my noggin' and show ya'll some action shots. We have some steep hills and deep cuts to ride but I'm not able to stop and get a pic, for fear of getting run over by someone behind me.
Brian, sorry I didn't put my "country" in the title, but to us, Texas is it's own country. Many folks here actually want to secede.
oh yes Greg my daughter loved your Texan hospitallity and food. She visited Alamo and did river walk she also had an encounter with local wildlife in the shape of a copperhead which decided to pay a visit to her hosts back yard one night my daughter decided to investigate what the dog was going nuts at she grabbed dog by tail and run inside panic stricken and breathless much to the amuzement of the rest of family! something we dont encounter in the uk. it wont stop her coming back in fact its all shes been talking about
...Thought I would add this- I had just run thru this puddle and my tires split between two deep ruts. I told Josh to follow and I would get a video but after he saw me nearly crash ... This is what he decided to do instead
