Opening up a mechanical speedo clock

I have broken the speedo drive inside the clock. (Slewed off a steep decline into a fallen log on Sunday in the snow!).

I need to open the clock to see inside and see if it can be fixed.

I can't see how it comes apart. It looks as if it should prise open around the groove with a stanley knife but I don't want to force it.

Has anyone opened one up before, any tips on opening it up.

Been there done that. I used a small screwdriver to pry it apart and then sealed it up with glue. However, they are sealed units and should not be opened! If you break it it isn't my fault lol.

Are you sure that the cable and speedo drive unit is working correctly?

thanks, yes both work OK, I can see where it has broken away but want to get inside to see if anything can be done. I will use a little more gentle force!

I have ordered a second hand spare off ebay just in case hmm

Got it open, warmed up on radiator and prised with stanley blade.

The male fitting that takes the cable and turns the magnet had broken loose from the plate, just an interferance fit.

Plastic spindle that drives the trip was broken and metal cover/bracket bent so that the magnet was not turning properly.

My mechanic mate who is much better at this stuff than me repaired the spindle with super glue, straightened the bent magnet cover and refitted the spindle magnet drive interferance fit into the plate.

A dab of glue will refit the cover, job done. Back on the trails this saturday!
