new to the forum and after some info

just bought my latest TTR (my third) and after a bit of advice before I have it apart!

it has the awful clunk when switching off and it is my intention to replace the spragg clutch however it also has a nasty noise when turning over coming from the crank cast area and I'm wondering what this may be.

any ideas?

will try to post some photos

Welcome to the TTR Forum, Ants.

I see you're a bonny lad from Geordieland. I've trailed a lot of lanes in the NE and Cumbria - great times. aww

The TTR sprag clutch is a weakness and annoying expense when it does go.

Perhaps renewing it will take away the the crankcase noise too, unless there is more wear/damage that you don't know about.

Careful examination and exploration should point you to what is wrong. Try using a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to locate the source of any noise.

Whatever you do - gan cany, man, till tha sorted.........

Martyn

Cheers Martin
The first photo is taken on the top of Breast High Road in the Lake District last weekend.
Fantastic lanes over there.
The noise is when it's cranking over and sounds like a tooth or two missing!
I'm not going to start it until I have it to bits as it was quite alarming.
Will update with photos.

Thanks for the picture location detail, Ants.

I see that Breasthigh Road has/will have a TRO and may soon be out of bounds until works are completed. cry

Breasthigh Road (Borrowdale) is in a lovely area but a tad out of reach from us in Devon.

Your transmission noise - have you checked the chain tension and sprockets?

Martyn

Sounds awfully like a worn sprag has damaged the starter pinion and maybe chipped the starter gears as well - see here for help and advice on the strip down and rebuild.

Good luck!

Brian
