Hi Everyone. My name is Joshua and I just procured a new to me 04 TTR250 over the weekend. I've recently gotten into riding and have been borrowing an interesting bike from my father in law (1986 Honda ATC200S converted from a trike to a fat tire bike) and thought I should finally get my own ride. I did a lot of searching on craigslist and found a really clean, low mileage TTR250 a few hours away from me. The previous owner had it sitting in their garage since 2008 and it needs a little TLC and maintenance to get it back into good running condition, but its a very clean bike and I'm hoping to have all the little issues sorted out this week so I can hit the trails this weekend.
Replace bent brake lever - Ordered, arriving tomorrow
Dump old gas & clean carb - done, old gas out. Cleaned carb (one jet was completely blocked)
Replace brake fluid - tomorrow
Replace Spark Plug - Ordered, arriving tomorrow
Change Oil - Thursday if all goes well
Clean & re-oil air filter - tomorrow
Clean & re-oil chain - tomorrow
Looks like I have a busy day tomorrow. So far I had great luck with the shop manual pdf and a post on cleaning the jets on the carb. This is all new to me so I really appreciate all the members contributions. If all goes well I should be firing up the bike and warming her up for an oil change on thursday. Goal is still to hit the trail on saturday.
The only thing on the to-do list that I will be putting off for just a bit longer is replacing the seals in the brake calipers, replacing the brake lines and rebuilding the master cylinders. Owners manual says I should be doing those things because of the age by now even though it only has about 500 miles on it.
Welcome, Josh. I live just over the hill from you.
Thanks for the welcome. I'd say you live over just a little hill for sure. Where do you go to ride? So far I've only been to Metcalf.... I'm assuming you probably go to Hollister since its closer to you.
Remove and re-clean carb, more in depth this time. Bike is finally idling well, but is dying at partial throttle. When i have been able to get it going power delivery is very inconsistent with steady throttle. I really don want to take it to the dealer, but if I can't figure it out I will.

My bet would be on a partially blocked pilot jet. They are difficult to clean properly and have been the cause of poor running on my own bikes and other owners who have posted on the subject recently.
They aren't expensive so why not just try a new one?
I have ridden at Hollister some. I only go there when there is the best chance of it being pretty empty. My favorite thing to do is to go off somewhere with forest service roads or trails and camp there for a few days. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to ride much for the last 8 months or so for various reasons, but I hope that will change soon.

Thanks for the tip Brian. That was exactly it. I bought a new pilot jet from my local yamaha dealer and now she is running great.
Took the bike out to the local county OHV park for some trail riding yesterday. We had a little rain overnight so conditions were muddy in the morning, but improved as the trails dried out. I hit a mud pit coming around a corner and went down. Aside from getting dirty everything came out good and I was back up and running in a min. Bike performed great through the rest of the day. I think i need to look into the lowering link though. I can only touch the ground with my toes when its level. When its uneven its a little sketchy, dropped the bike because once in the staging area because i didn't realize i was on a little slope and thought the ground was closer than it actually was.
