Hi, thought I'd add a couple of pics of the progress I've made sorting my newly acquired TTR for a bit of a Greenlaning fun.

It's supposed to be a cheap project so this bike will have no-frills but I have spent money in what I think are the right places giving it a good service ect.

I have replaced the swing arm linkage bearings, handlebars, tyres, exhaust, full service and a good clean up.

Thanks to Brian for a great service supplying the linkage bearings and handlebars.

I made the exhaust up myself as the old one was rusted out and I could not find any quiet exhausts at a cheap price using a standard exhaust from my XT660 (I knew there was a reason why I kept it in the loft for so long and not chuck them away)  shortened by about 8inches removing some of the baffles and the cat.

I will be even happier with it once I have had the seat recovered but for now here she is.

What colour seat are you thinking of?  confuse

IMO black would look nice. aww

BTW - I know first hand the meaning of "Short arms, deep pockets".

My mother came from Scotland and my father was a Yorkshireman! biggrinbiggrin

Nice, I also have an XT660R. Did you have to change the springs to cope with the extra weight?

 yes... the forks were full rebuilt...

new springs / travel shortened to 240mm from 300mm

300mm of travel on a bike with 250mm of ground clearance

would of had the bash plate hitting the ground...

valve stacks have been changed to a endruro set up as 

MX tracks don't have rocks/tree roots/streams etc..

it also has a Ohlins shock in the rear..

 

I have a set of 05 YZF250 USD forks I want to put in the TTR ...

It's been slow progress but I've done all the bits I planned to do to the TTR, got the seat covered, made a proper link pipe and a bash plate and a few other little bits.

From now on just maintenance.... until the next bright idea!

A few of us are hoping to go on a mission this weekend round some of the Salisbury so I'll try to get some pics of her on location biggrin

Nice ride Chimpy.

Was just wondering if that muffler fit on with no mods or was some hacking involved?

Woops...sorry, just re-read your first post on how you moded it. So the the pipe that goes into the header fit right up? Just a simple cut back on the muffler body?

 Right i'm not 100% sure what info you guys are after but hopefully these pics will explain all............

This is my 2nd attempt with modding a used xt silencer I got another for £30 from ebay as the first one i cut about was still a little loud but now it sounds nice and quiet.

Here's my shortened silencer next to a standard length xt660 one.

I cut it down by exactly 7.5" allowing me to keep 1 baffle tube and the cat, sorry i have no pics of the inside of the silencer but in cutting it down i removed 2 of the 3 baffles but its still quite quiet due to the cat i guess. 

Heres the link pipe all made from 2 bits of the xt pipe. The end that clamps to the header of the xt is the correct size for the ttr header.

I welded a nut to the link pipe too for the mounting bolt.

 

The end product looks pretty tidy to me and as quiet as a new standard exhaust.

Looks like I have a little rust on the frame to sort next.hmm

Give me a shout if you want to now anything else.

You must have used a mig or tig welder with how neat the welds are. I must buy myself one and forget the useless stick welder until I need to weld something over 2mm.

Took her on a bit of an excursion to Salisbury plane but had so much fun I only remembered to get 1 pic taken during a pit stop on the oxdrove on the way home.

On the trip some of the lanes were pretty tight and my hands felt a bit exposed to branches and brambles etc so I fitted some cheapo ebay special hand guards and a tool bag for a few extra bits and pieces.

Since then I got bored one evening and stripped it down the result a de-rusted and painted the frame and other bits black and I also decided to have a go with vinyl wrap biggrin I'm sure not everyone will like it but it was only a cheap laugh till it peals off but I was surprised what can be done with the stuff just using a little heat on it from the wifes hair drier!

Vinyl wrap, that's a great idea, my plastics are in an awful condition. I have just put a load of stickers over them and to be honest it looks like a pile of crap, so this could be the answer,     thanks for posting it!

Vinyl wrap seems to work quite well. The pics below are of some panels from a blue TTR. Don't like the pattern but the idea is good biggrin

How did you do the shrink wrapping - can you buy a sheet and do it yourself and, if so, how did you do it please?

It was Joes bike that has had the makeover!

I bought a 1520mm x 500mm sheet but this was barely enough as I had to do 2 layers on the tank as the bright ttr decal could be seen through the 1st layer.
Application was easy, just clean the surface, cut out a bit of vinyl roughly the shape of the panel, peal the backing off and carefully apply it whilst chasing out the bubbles and applying a bit of heat from a hair drier when working round corners etc. The heat helps to shrink and stretch the vinyl.
Once applied I cut away excess vinyl with a scalpel.

You'll have it sussed once you have done the first panel I expect.
