On my last ride the bike sounded a little more 'grindy' than usual when starting up. I figured my sprag clutch was failing as it's been clunking a little louder, but when I pulled the cover I found the starter shaft is missing a few teeth. The idler gear is missing one too.
There are a number of sellers with "New" motors for around $80, which is a lot cheaper than the $220 for an OEM unit. There are also some used genuine parts kicking around for about half that (teeth intact).
Any thoughts on what route I should take? $220 new OEM, $80 new aftermarket, $45 used OEM?
Thanks, Brian. I'm leaning towards the used unit. It's used, but so is mine and it still spins nicely. A newer used unit is probably OK too (it's also 6 years newer).
All in this will cost a few hundred bucks, too bad I didn't get to the sprag clutch sooner. Could have saved my starter and idler. Oh well.
