TTR250 generator cover
Permalink

Hi All,

I hope that somebody can help.

My TTR has sprung a oil leak and I need a generator cover otherwise i am bikeless or have a useless bike.

My TTR is a white OE model.

How unfortunate, Kevin. hmm

Image2.jpg

Has it just started to leak oil?

Has the bike been dropped?

Has the cover been taken off and put back recently?

Maybe it's nothing other than a gasket that's leaking - or is there definitely a crack/break in the casting?

More details would help us to help you. confuse

Martyn

Hi,

The casing is cracked in a couple of places. so my friend , who is a mechanic told me, it needs replacing. I will double check that he can't get it wielded. He would go that route if possible though.

The bike is dropped/ fallen off of regularly but i haven't taken the cover off at all. It has had a small leak from around the starter gear cover (fig.30) for a while but last tuesday I went to go on a night ride and it was pissing oil all over the side of the engine.

Regards

Kev

Oooh, bummer Kev. bleh

Are replacement casings readily available?

Have you tried eBay?

Have you thought of !B8,LbcQEWk~$(KGrHqV,!hcEyrsF6JN3BM2-7VqgDg~~_35.JPG JB Weld at all?

Have tried Ebay and of course Brian . But not much luck for 2nd hand items. Brain has new ones for around the £150 mark but on a bike that is worth £900 that is a bit steep. Well £900 if it was working of course.
I have found a company in the U.S. that can deliver a new one to me for $150 which is about £90 inc taxes. But will have a better look in the UK before I buy it.

Regards

Kev

JB weld / chemical metal would do the trick or if the cracks arent on the part where the seal goes it could be welded if you can find someone who can weld alloy

I've no idea which model the motor is out of though. Does anyone know if it matters?

Hi andy.
I have been to a few trf meetings in Welwyn but not currently a paid up member. I believe that the cover fits all models of ttr.
How much do you want for it?
Kindest regards
Kevin

See if dull thud comes back to you with a price but i may have one for sale in a week or two when i get mine stripped as it needs a top end rebuild and a sprag clutch and if the starter and gears are stripped too il break the bike as it will cost more to fix than its worth

Il keep you posted as to what im doing and what condition mines in when it comes off

I don't think that is the casing cover that Tuffles is after.  crynoconfuse

This cover shown on eBay ..............

 Gear cover.jpg

.... and is item 30 in the exploded diagram and covers the starter gear.

I think item 1 - crankcase cover is the item required.

Good try though.

If the cracks are caused by a sprag or starter/starter gear problem (as happened to the casing in the pics below) then Chemical Metal won't cut the mustard. The cracks will open again as there is quite a lot of stress in the area of the large starter gear.

It is possible to weld the casing but you need to have a good welder and be prepared to have to dress the repair.

I have no clue what to ask for it. £30 doesn't sound too bad. Are they worth much more than that? I've not had the motor run so I wouldn't want to offer any kind of guarantee but it looks fine to me.
Maybe a bit dusty.
Sorry if it takes a while to get back as I don't get here every day.

How do I get it to tell me if there's been any 'activity' on a thread?

Andy

Glad your sorted tuffles ,finaly got my finger out and stripped mine down and the good news for me is the starter and gears are in great nick

I was convinced by the loud grinding on startup and very loud bang when stopping that they would all be fubar so goes to show how badly ttr sprag clutches can get yet the bike still runs

So il be stripping the top end soon and il get a shopping list put together and get in touch with brian

Hope you get yours sorted soon

Washed the bike for the first time today (it was dirty when i bought it) and the front right crankcase and right engine (clutch) cover have cracks which have been badly repaired with tiger seal !

So first thing is to go round the guy i bought it offs house with a bag of flaming dog **** ! and then possibly back to plan a for a replacement engine no

Really!! That's pretty space age.

It's not is it? My Mum could've sussed that.

I shall fish said case cover out and see if our lovely Linda at work will weigh it for me on the franking machine.

Andy
