Hi just joined as i bought a 95 ttr 250 last week in need of a fair bit of work

Il be in need of some advice as it needs an engine rebuild ,it smokes and has a rattle on start up and a nice clonk when you stop it

I wont know for sure till i get it stripped but i suspect the starter shaft and gear will be worn and defo valve stem seals possibly piston / barrel worn or the clonk could be the cam chain ?

How much do complete known good engines go for ? and what years had kick and electric start as id like both as i do alot of off road and mine only has electric

Thanks

Sounds like you are in for a complete top end rebuild, including the sprag clutch. That could prove quite costly! However, I have never seen a complete second hand engine for sale other than once on this forum. The price of a complete engine would be something ridiculous  like AU $900.00~ $1500.00 (533.090 ~ 888.601 GBP).

I think you would be better off rebuilding the engine that you have to be honest. Unless of course you can find a good one cheap (not likely).

You must have a US or CA imported bike because as far as I know they are the only models without the kick-starter.

Hi, I stay in Hawick and have a 1994 ttr Raid that I am in the process of rebuilding.

I am led to believe that it was a jap import in 1999, could have been a container load as I have seen four so far with almost identical reg numbers all ending in TUP.

No kickstart either.

Where you about ?

I just remembered that I saw an engine on eBay.uk a few months ago. Pretty sure it sold for around $600 GBP.

There is another complete motor on eBay but unfortunately it is in the US...

The bike hasnt been cared for so im ready for the gears to be worn as i suspect the sprag clutch may of been gone for a while ! im ready for a full top end rebuild but my thinking was if my engine was too bad (starter ,gears ,sprag clutch ,piston ,rebore ,valves etc) i could get a replacement and break mine for parts

I wont know till i get it stripped and il keep my eyes peeled but as bikes are usualy broken when the engine blows up i wont hold my breath !

Brian ive read alot of your rebuild threads they are very informative and you mention having a few spare bikes and lots of spares ,do you ever break engines ? if so id be interested if my starter gears are worn

Thanks

There is a seller on eBay advertising parts purporting to be TTR250 but they aren't - that bottom is one of them. I think they are probably TT250 parts. I have told him/her but have been ignored no

I am guessing the smoking and rattling on start up is a worn piston and/or valve stem oil seals. You may need a rebore. Hopefully your starter pinion and gears are all OK in which case you only need a new sprag clutch to cure the "clonk". On top of that you would need a head/base gasket set.

In terms of whether it is economical to repair, you need to bear in mind that if you do the rebuild then you will have a really good engine that you know all about and should go on for many years to come.

Once you have completed the strip down, it would be interesting to see your list of parts needed.

Hi Chris

It is true that I have loads of s/h spares! However, I have set myself a target of four more refurbs after which I am going to try and spend more time riding my TTRs!

It will only be when I have completed these four refurbs (one is nearing completion - see http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t55048534/another-restoration-started/?page=1#lastPostAnchor ) that I will know what spares I have left over to sell.

I have already caused myself problems by selling parts that I later need myself disbelief

There will almost certainly be a lot of engine parts although I can't promise cylinder heads as they are usually the first to get damaged if an owner runs their TTR low on oil and allow them to overheat.

In terms of timescale, I am aiming to complete my refurbs by end of December but nearly 6 weeks of ill health has really put my schedule back. So spares should start spilling out after Christmas wink

We stock a lot of new spares including sprag clutches and starter gears - see http://www.totallyttrs.com/NOS/index - if you want to get your rebuild done soon.

Brian
