On cars I throw the valves in a jar of Cola for a few hours, all your crud wipes off.

i always shot blast them... leave them in the head so the seats and valve faces don't get blasted.... blast the combustion chamber & down the ports..just a very quick flick over with old used blasting medium.. is almost a fine powder...
