I am 99.9% sure that on all the bikes I've ever ridden (road) it has been possible to start the bike in gear with the clutch leaver held in...am I wrong?!?
My TTR will not allow me to start the bike in gear. This is a right pain after I have stalled the bike especially as it seems very difficult to find neutral when the bike is hot. Is there a switch or something which can be removed/by-passed to allow the bike to be started in gear?
You should be able to start the TTR in gear with the clutch in (if the stand is up). My guess is that your clutch switch has slipped out or is malfunctioning.
What Brian suggests is the problem. You can take the switch apart and clean it (or rejoin), or just unplug the clutch switch and join the two wires leading from harness together to bypass it.

Otherwise you need to take the tank off and put a closed loop of wire on a connector block to pop into the empty clutch switch connector block
So, either (a) fit the proper switch (I think the best idea as it prevents you accidentally putting the TTR in gear with the clutch out) or (b) bypass it.
Thanks guys, re fitting shock and fitting gasket to carb so bike in bits and tank off. Friend made up a loop to plug in and I can now start it in gear with clutch pulled in...joy!!
