Oil filler knackered.

I decided it was time for an oil and filter change, however it seems that last time I topped up the oil I must have over tightened the filler cap, as today I could not get it offblankstare......... Needless to say, the bolt head is now rounded off.

so two things: firstly, in the short term, can I get oil into the engine through any other means? Secondly any smart ideas about how I could get the filler cap off, without risking any more damage??

Thanks, Nigel.

luckily you can order a new filler cap off Brian ( http://www.ttr250.com/TTR_extras/ )
then you can try mole grips if not what about putting a slot in the old one with a dremel and screwing it off ?
Cant you top it up via the oil check bolt ? (page 71 of the manual) with a small tube/funnel.

Bad luck but not an uncommon occurrence - second only to rounding off the sump drain plug cry

If the cap is scrap then don't be afraid to use a cold chisel and hammer on the edge to start it moving.

Sadly our supply of after-market caps in silver and titanium dried up and its been months waiting for new stock.

We have only a gold-coloured one in stock. See here

Thank you both. Eventually got it off by hammering a smaller size socket on. I think I'm going to have the same problem with the sump plug.

Nigel.

someone was a little heavy handed at the last service then,
I use a 1/4 drive on parts like that so you know your not going to over torque it too much.

The filler cap is famous at my work for jamming if it's overtightened. It needs to be just seated with the O-ring is fully compressed, and that's it. Sump plug, obviously, needs to be a little tighter. It's a common thing that people lean on drain plugs until something breaks. Some fool overtightened the transfer drain plug in my old Toyota Prado, and the transfer case actually cracked and started leaking as the bloke had to hammer it undone. I am paranoid about overtightening maintenance items, but even so I've managed to strip a clutch cover thread confuse
