have you checked the ground continuity ? when any customers complain of excess lamp blowing it is either a poor bulb holder or poor neutral connection (ground in 12v systems).

So a multimeter can measure a few things, usually:
DC voltage -> comes out of the the voltage reg and battery
AC voltage -> comes out of the alternator and into the voltage reg
Resistance -> the measure (in ohms) of the opposition in a wire to current passing through it
Current -> how much power a circuit of wire uses.
Some also have continuity buzzer, think of those games where you pass a wire hoop over a twisty wire, touch and it buzzes. It buzzes when the circuit is completed and current flows.
You can use a buzz circuit tester or the resistance measure. Put one probe at one end of the wiring, the other at the other end. If you get a buzz the two ends of the wire connect.
Same for problems like this.. you can use the resistance scales. 0 or a low number is good.
