I use one of these:-

The above version is as supplied by the VMCC and is sold by them for £24

Mine will fit the TTR bars and is easy to load, wind on and see clearly.

I use this unit on the XTR along with a GPS..

it's stood up to a few Dusty Butt 1000 ...Is 2 days of bike wreaking terrain..
