How does the TTR 250 fare on the freeway?

I was all set to buy a KLX 250 dual sport for use on a dirt road with some freeway riding and saw a TTR 250 for sale that was made street legal. I've heard most 250 class DSs get a bit shaky at 60mph +. How fast can the TTR go and how stable is it at high speeds?

Thanks.

Ted

I've found mine fine up to 60-65 and that's on trail tyres. Downhill with a following wind I've had 75 mph, maybe due to sprocket set up.

Any trail bike is going to feel cool in the winter with the lack of protection at these speeds, especially here in Scotland!

I have used mine on the roads here in the uk riding from Surrey to devon loaded up with gear, this is ok as long as you dont mind a more sedate pace, I Potter along at 50-55mph with short bursts of 60-65mph for getting past lorries and other slow movers, took some getting used to after a 600, felt like I could hop off and run along side ;-( but you get to take in the scenery

It also helps having 6 gears,  Not super fast, but capable, and depending on your tyres, its different from my road bike,   I feel better having a mirror fitted to see what is behind.

With 14/49 gearing it is suitable for the road, however it is not ideal. It will do it but is a little under-powered for high speeds. That said, people have crossed countries on them ''packed to the brim'' with no drama's. As long as you do not intend to be cruising around doing ''wheelies'' or such, it will be a fine stead indeed.

For trails the TTR250 is the ''ducks nuts'' and performs flawlessly. thumbsup.gif

If you want a bike that goes fast and does it all but is high maintenance, go the KLX250. On the other hand, if you don't mind plodding along, the TTR250 is bullet-proof and does not require much maintenance other than regular oil changes and usual maintenance (wheel bearings etc.).

With the mod's that I have done, I have a top speed of 130 KMH (with 14/50 gearing) and it can get as high as 140 KMH with Nos so it can be made into a decent road bike also. Just don't expect to be wheel-standing at 100KMH or such.

I have had a lot of trail bikes xr400 wr250 drz400 xr600 gasgas ec    ect and the ttr is by far the best road bike of any as it has a sixth gear that the others dont .

If you set it up right it will tour all day at 60 to 70 mph .

No vibes and a good saddle make it in my opinion the best enduro for road use .

It takes distance with ease just dont forget your on a 250 when you go to overtake .

Thanks for all the good feedback. I think I might be opening up a can of worms here but in my searching I just found a 01 WR250F street legal for around the same price. I did a little research and it seems the WR is a better bike overall. I am a new rider and my main use will be on a dry dirt/gravel road and a paved road with a 55mph speed limit, but I will need it to get up to 60mph just to keep up with traffic. And I would like to do some wood trails in my off time for fun.

I don't like the fact that the WR is only a 5 speed, but I have read that even still it is faster than the TTR. I know this is a TTR site but does anyone have an opinion about the WR compared to the TTR for my usage?

Thanks again.

Ted

I own both.
My WR is much more powerful, has more top speed (despite 5 close ratios), is tougher, has better suspension.
My TTR is more comfortable, has better lights (in au), and better luggage carrying capacity (stronger subframe).
both seem reliable.
The TTR will easily sit at highways speeds.
Neither bike has any speed instability issues, like for example some Husabergs have.
The only bitumen the WR sees is getting to the dirt, for some reason I would never ride it around town.
The TTR is capable enough on pretty much any dirt but the WR is more fun.
