STARTING PROBLEM ( help )

Some times when I turn the ignition on and press the starter button nothing happens except a clicking noise, which I presume is the solanoid throw in,  if I put in gear and turn the engine over pull in the clutch and press the botton it fires up, It doesent do it all the time, ut too often for my liking.

It could be the switch, solenoid or starter brushes.

The next time it does it, if you are feeling brave, short out the terminals on the solenoid with something heavy that won't easily melt - do not do this unless you are confident and capable! If nothing happens then its likely one or both of the starter motor brushes is badly worn or sticking.

If the starter motor turns then the problem is the switch or solenoid. You can try cleaning inside the switch and see if that improves things else try another solenoid.

Good luck

Brian

Your problem has already been mentioned above. The only other thing that it can be is a bad earth (not that likely).

My money is on the starter motor brushes or solenoid.

Starter motor out and stripped down, as suggested brushes were stuck, well one of them was and much shorter than the other, took it down to my local auto electritions to see if he could get the parts needed, he took a look and said no problem, £25.00 for complete rebuild, that cant be bad as Brian at totallyttr said brushes alone from Fowlers were £50.00, must admit I know the bloke and he's one of the oldy worldy engineers who does repairs, not just buy new and throw the old out, hardest bit is waiting three days for him to get parts and do it, while I was in the mood I fitted new fork gaters, extra long clutch and trottle cables, frame protection plates and new air filter.
