Hi every one I'm Mick from Morecambe, just put a deposit on a  a Yam ttr open eduro trail bike 1993 with 8,000 miles on the clock, Ive not seen the bike but from photos and what the owner told me its a good clean bike and runs like it should, the only thing worrying me is am I going to struggle with only having a 30" inside leg.

Welcome to the site

I only just touch toes down, it's swinging my leg over that's the problem, problem is this type of bike is tall

Hi and welcome to the mad world of ttr's
Brian 'ttrfan' does a lowering link and you can re shape the seat to make it lower ...
But yes getting ya leg over can be the challenge lol

Good luck

Welcome to TTR land, Grandad.

I guess, at 30 inches, that you may have a bit of trouble when you stop - make sure that you are near the kerb or wall. biggrin

As has been said, there are ways to reduce height - linkage, fork stanchions pushed up in the yokes, etc.

To go all the way you need built up boots, smaller wheels and no air in the tyres.

I'm sure you'll find that where there's will there's a way.

DAKAR RALLY 1983... a "dwarf from Belgium”, as a private participant, was at the start for the first time : Gaston Rahier. Everybody was laughing when Rahier, the former 125cc Motor Cross World Champion, with his 1.64 meter tried to get on his Monster Bike…But Rahier developed a special technique. Standing next to the revving Bike, he selected 1st gear, and roll off standing on the Left cylinder head, and just before selecting 2nd gear he jumped on the Bike… Rahier provided real fireworks in every heat of the Rally, but was forced to give up prior to end of the Rally due to Technical problems. BMW management was so impressed with “the dwarf from Belgium” that they offered him for 1984 a Works contract

Thanks chaps for your advice, my other bike is a tiger 800 XC so I am used to tallish top heavy bikes, but the tts looks quite a bit taller, at least I am sure it wont feel as top heavy as the tiger, only time will tell, Paul13 the bike is located Darlington area, thats about 98 miles from where I live so I cant just nip around and try it out

I you are lightweight as well as short in the leg, you will lose a bit of seat height simply by adjusting the rear suspension sag correctly for your weight.

Mick

I am just up the road from you – Arnside.

I have 31” inside leg, my blue TTR has a Kouba lowering link fitted, I have softened the rear spring off and dropped the front forks 15mm.
It is now spot on and very nice to ride.
I did try a TTR without a lowering link fitted but it felt too high for me, especially for trail riding.

I recently rode another blue TTR with all of above done plus the seat being sculptured out but I found this bike too low and uncomfortable to ride with my knees being high, so you can overdo the lowering of a TTR.
Make one change at a time but don’t go too low if that makes sense.

I would wait until you get the bike and try it out before ordering anything, you never know it may unknown to the previous owners already have had a lowering link fitted.

Tiger 800XC nice bike often thought it could be the next move from my Versys

I dont think of myself as short, I'm 5'10, but I struggled with touching the ground, eventually I fitted a lowering link from totally ttrs and this has made things so much better.

Bike is electric start which really helps. I am a bit shorter. Only have had a problem when I put the bag on the seat as its higher to lift the leg.

Congrats.  Did you buy it off gumtree ?

I am around your same size & was also a bit apprehensive about the height. At first thought about lowering things but I'm glad I didn't. Just give yourself some seat time, once you're moving it's all irrelevant & you get used to it quickly. Plus you keep all your ground clearance.

Swinging a leg over can be tricky but often I'll put my other foot on the peg first, then climb on, sort of like getting on a horse. Stopping, I can do both toes or shift off to one side on uneven ground.

It amazes me how many people have posted pictures sitting on their TTR's, with both feet on the ground & their knees slightly bent as if it's a low bike. On a side note, I think the WR/YZ seats are 3" higher than a TTRs.

Just being able to just touch the ground with your toes isn't a good thing, as I found out crossing a river (will post about that soon). Since fitting the lowering link the bike is so much more fun to ride. Tall bikes look cool but not so good if you need to get your feet down quick. Lifting my leg over wasn't a problem.

Shouldnt.be a problem. I'm a proper short arse, my ttr was standard height. I.never had trouble. Once youre used to it you'll be fine.

Feet up riding is the way forward. Practice pulling.off with your feet on the pegs, and riding dead slow.

it's funny watching someone riding slowly badly...

Glad to hear you and your true love are united at last wink

If your oil is that bad, next time you do an oil change- drain the oil, put 1.5 liters of Kerosene or deisel in, kick it over or spin it with the electric start (making sure that the spark plug lead is not attached). Crank it around for about a minute, then drain. If required, continue this process until it is clean as a whistle.

REMEMBER: Do not let the engine start with deisel or kero for oil or it may ignite KKPOW!! no
