Hi all, thanks for the replies and welcomes smile

Difficult to be exact about budget yet, as I'm still sussing out what price levels are.  However, as a rough guide I'd like to get a decent, road-ready (i.e. tax, MOT, good tyres, serviced, running) bike for around £1500 - £2000. That also needs to include any van hire if I have to pick it up from the other end of the country. Main issue, as always when looking for a comparatively rare bike, is getting to check it over thoroughly and listen to it before committing to buy....  (e.g. this starter sprag clutch issue - listening for the dreaded bang!)  Condition and history is more important to me than the outright age of the bike.

More reading to do!

Greg, dude - you have a whole world of language issues to wade through!  However, rest assured we don't all speak like the cast of Downtown Abbey.... biggrin  (Not seen that?  YouTube it....)

Hello all!

Just joined this useful forum.

I'm a TRF member since 2010 (Herts group), looking for a TTR for laning.

I've been on one of them there orange bikes for the past few years, but I'm after something a bit more easy going and lower maintenance!   The cash is burning a hole in my pocket from the sale of my last bike, so I'll be scanning the For Sale section to start with....

Looking forward to buying and riding.

smile

Welcome bakerlonglegs!
I know you will enjoy reading about our TTR. Hope you find a nice one.

I am learning that "English" is a bit different on sites where people from all over the world are involved.
bakerlonglegs spoke of ...laning. I had to look it up as I didn't know what the heck he was referring to. Here is what I came up with for us lesser versed folks-

LANING : "The hobby of driving green lanes or unsurfaced roads usually with a 4x4 or trail motorcycle. Mainly UK English."

I usually check this site for wrenchin' advise. Now I will use it to resource my lingo.
(wrenchin' : the art of fixin' broken stuff / lingo : the art of speaking)

Brian- Maybe you should start a section for the language differences for all of us?... I noticed Clutha is one (of many) that I am really getting quite a number of useful words to look up. YOU ROCK MAN!

Ya'll crack me up. (ya'll : everyone) (crack : that means make me laugh)
... I luv this site (luv : love)--....I'll stop now
greg

Hello!  I live near Welwyn Garden City.

5 other Yamahas?  You must really like them!  This will be my first Yamaha off-road bike - I have owned a 600 Fazer, which was a cracking bike (Thundercat engined version).  I tried a 2-stroke for a few hours on a ride once - I couldn't get on with the powerband, I guess I'm just a 4 stroke plodder!

Thanks very much for the offer of the trailer, really appreciated.  Unfortunately I don't have a towbar (looked into buying one when I first got my current car, but I didn't think I'd have it long, so didn't bother fitting one.  Of course, 4 years later I've still got it......biggrin )

Lol, I have 3 DT 175 mx an RS/ RD200 hybrid, and a DT 125 mx frame that will be rebuilt.with spare.bits and an early yz or IT engine.

Two strokes are great! You dont plough a furrow when you back off, you can drown it and not worry too much. Plus they weigh far less.

But the TTR will be a great bike for you.

I live in Hitchin. Not too far from you. If you fancy a ride.out bell me on 07894018682

I've only been on TRF rides so far - nothing against the GLC, there just seem to be more TRF rides going on (or they're just better at publicising them).

Ride out sounds good, cheers - I'll give you a bell when I get a bike sorted!

Recently purchased a TTR, getting used to it, still buying my gear, need mirrors and a few items.

good luck with the search,  I have car with towbar, you pay the fuel, if i can help collect I will, have a folding trailer, so pack it in the car.

Also live in Herts, Baldock, so likewise, time out will be good, joined the TRF last month, been on a few rides with them.  totally new to off road riding, skill set still improving. lol
