My second thread started in a day; something of a record for me!

 

So, I got my TTR out of the garage after not being out for a couple of months, to prep it for its MoT. She started first time and all looked well until I checked the back brake - Nothing. The pedle pressed all the way down but no braking on the back wheel.

 

There's plenty of fluid in the reservoir, and no sign of any leaking at all, but no pressure getting to the caliper. I took the wheel off to inspect the caliper, and of course it's siezed up. However I would have thought that the pedel would not have much travel if that were the case, so maybe I have 2 problems?

I checked if anything came out of the bleed nipple when I pressed the pedel - nothing did.

 

To cap it all, the pins holding the pads in are also siezed solid, and the allen key sockets seem quite rounded - I'm scared to round them off completely.

 

So, any ideas where to start looking for the no pressure problem? - do I need to strip down the master cylinder? Is there anything else to check before I do that?

 

And secondly, any tips for freeing up the caliper? And spares for it - is the same one used on any other bikes as far as you know?

Bad luck Nigel cry

I recollect that Jarrah has a method for getting seized pad pins out so hopefully he is watching the forum. If not, try using an impact driver after leaving the pins soaking in WD40 or similar for a while. If you don't have an impact driver then it is sometimes possible to free the threads by putting the Allen socket in the head of the pin and giving it a whack with an Irish screwdriver. Nothing to lose eh?

Caliper repair kits here

Very rare for rear brake master cylinders to fail but it sounds as if something is amiss with yours. Fairly simple job to do a refurb I guess.

Payment received! Trish has packed the caliper repair kit and it will be sent in today's post wink

Don't forget you may also need a brake master cylinder repair kit - see here - they seem expensive so it might be worth checking if there are any on eBay. We don't stock them as yours is the first case I have been aware of where the master cylinder has failed!

That's brilliant - thanks Brian.

 

I managed to get the pins out after a good soak in WD40 and using an extra long Allen key! I want to put new ones in though, so I don't have this problem next time. With plenty of Copper Slip too!

 

So where I am is:

- Caliper off and freed up. Was full of fluid, so that looks good.

- Brake hose removed from master cylinder end, full of fluid - good.

- Reservoir hose to master cylinder disconnected, full of fluid - good.

- master cylinder removed, full of fluid, good, but no pumping action when operated - not good.

 

So it looks like the problem's with the master cylinder. Will have to strip it down and check it out. Maybe one of the seals has gone? A job for tomorrow.

Seems strange as it was fine the last time I used the bike

Hopefully the last update on this - I took the master cylinder apart last night.

 

The Piston was completely seized inside the cylinder, in the on position which is why the peddle had full movement, with no effect. It also explians why I could not push the piston in the caliper in when I was removing the rear wheel, so thinking it was seized as well. However, I would have expected the rear brake to be permanently on? Oh well.

 

I found a new repair kit on eBay for £22, so waiting for that and the parts from Brian and then will be back in business!

Thanks to Brian and Trish - super service as always, And a repair kit from eBay, I have got the back brake working again.

 

Happy days, now ready for MoT - hopefully will still be happy after that!
