Hi- I'm from York & am looking for a decent Raid as near to stock as possible- hopefully with a rear rack on.

Please do contact me if you can help.

Regards

Rod

Welcome to the TTR forum, Rod.

Good luck with your search, TTRs seem to be currently in short supply so it may take a while. blankstare

Hello Martyn; I have been lurking on here for about 3 months after contacting Brian.

I thought about a blue TTR, but reconsidered, after checking my inside leg measurements!

I figured a raid would be more suitable due to the tank size, but would consider an OE if I can increase the tank size- can it be done?

Hi Rod

Martyn has given you some good info on the tanks

Regarding seat height of the blue (and white non-Raid model) TTRs, it is possible to reduce the ride height considerably. I went to extremes for a potential customer and got it down from 895mm to 812mm - see here - but that reduction can be lessened by leaving out one or more of the steps.

In terms of a cheap tank upgrade, the Raid petrol tank (16l compared to 9l) will fit but you really need a Raid seat to go with it and these are quite rare. What sort of daily mileage do you need to get from a tank without a refill?

When buying a TTR, it is always possible to pick up cheap ones via eBay but just be careful. If you have to replace the sprag clutch (£125) and /or suspension linkage bearings, tyres, chain and sprockets, brake parts, wheel bearings, etc., etc. you can soon run up a big bill making the original purchase not the bargain it seemed.

A rebore can cost nearly £200 without labour when you factor in a gasket set, valve stem oil seals (silly not to replace them when the head is off), new piston kit and the cost of the rebore (I now pay £28 for a rebore - more if I take out the barrel for a "bigger-than-next-oversize" piston) cry

Don't let that put you off a TTR as (a) you shouldn't be that unlucky plus (b) it would be the same, or worse, with any other brand/model plus they don't have the same level of support as the TTR wink

We are here to help if you need any advice. Also, see here

Brian

It can be done, Rod, but not without sourcing a larger tank first and then fitting it. aww

This LINK will take you to the FAQ area where this topic is discussed.

It is also discussed HERE in case you get a Blue TTR.

Thank you ever so much Martyn & Brian;

I had read the articles kindly provided a while back, but appear to have got bike blindness- trying to narrow down the best bike suitable, while doing a miriad of other things.
focus, focus, focus, Rod!

I am not over keen in lowering the suspension on a bike- but will certainly not dismis it.

I have been quite lucky with ebay purchases in the past-just the locations tend to let me down!- I have lost count of the times I have purchased from Portsmouth or Devon...it does help to know what to look for and this site really is a godsend.

The hunt continues.....

oh, one last thing- I have read a number of overlanding articles on this site, but can you point me to suitable mounting points to fabricate pannier racks (rear) on a raid- will I need to cut through the "pods"?

..here a shot of the back of the bike, without seat and plstics would be helpful, assuming it is a raid of course!
