Will a 19mm security chain fit through a TTR frame?

Hi all, I'm new here, from south west UK. Excuse the question straight away I'm picking up a TTR next week and need to get a chain (to go with garage wall anchor) before getting the bike as theft is pretty bad around here. Can anyone tell me if they currently use a 19mm thick chain through the frame? Or would anyone be SO kind as to check on their TTR if there's a gap big enough? If not, what's the biggest that could fit? The complete width of the chain links are 70mm wide. Thanks, Mark

Mark, which part of the frame will you want to fit the chain through?confuse

If it won't fit through the frame disbelief the wheels are spoked so the chain would fit through front or back wheel easily.

That means you could chain the bike to a floor or wall anchor by threading it through the swinging arm and rear wheel quite easily. wink

Hi Martyn,

Thanks for your reply. I'd like to fit it through a part of the frame where they couldn't unscrew/brake something and get it free.

If it was through the wheel and swingarm, then they could get the back wheel off, slip off the chain and get it into a van, right?

Yes, but it depends on lots of 'ifs' and 'ands'. confuse

There's always the option of putting the wall anchor so that the chain goes around the down tube between steering head and engine mounting.

There's the option of putting the security chain through the bottom frame rail, but if you have a bash plate it will limit access. confuse

The only other places a security chain may fit is around the rear footrest support tubes - either side, blankstare but the RH side tube can't be unscrewed, unlike the LH side. hmm

It must be bad in the SW region of UK, but there are thieves everywhere so it's best to be careful - I agree. Invest in a viscious dog as a bit of security. biggrin

I have a heavy plastic coated steel cable with 50mm eyelets on the ends

I slip it into the gap between the top of the motor and the frame and through the rear wheel and back, then secure it with a cut proof padlock unless you are carrying a 2mtr set of bolt cutters

I also put a heavy brass padlock through the front disk and of course don't forget the steering lock !

I'm going to get one of these soon, but I keep forgeting to buy one no       Disc Lock

BTW, make sure you keep your angle grinders and other cutting tools locked up, no point giving the thieving bastards the tools they need  furious

Thats a great idea Steve

I would be REALLY interested in seeing your way of locking your bike up as i am so worried about my bike now lol. Not sure if it would be the best idea to show the thieves how you lock your bike up though blankstare Maybe i'll have to just try it myself (no guidance :).

Thanks heaps for the stickers Steve....hope you approve of my application of them wink

Thanks Steve. That's what I'm aiming for, hopefully it'll fit between the top of the frame and the engine. I wonder what that gap measures at.

And I have a Xena XX14, very worthwhile!

And the answer to my first question is... JUST!

I can confirm a 19mm chain squeezes between the top of the motor and the frame.

And a Xena Disc Lock Alarm XX14 fits onto the front disc.

Thanks Mpok3....getting many dirtbikes nicked in the Surrey area so thought I'd better review security. Bought a 19mm 'protector' chain and it fits nicely through the top of the motor (blue TTR). Not sure if the decompressor mech might get in the way if fitted though. Hope this is useful.

Bolt cutters cut chains...
bolt cutters don't cut wire cables..

but they now make battrey grinders.. so nether is really safe anymore..

Angle grinders are a bit more conspicuous in operation than cutters and would take quite a while to get through a 19mm chain (I'm told), so I guess it's all about making things as difficult as possible.
