Hi all,

I have dabbled with green laning (trail riding) off and on over the years (mostly off), including recently on a Yamaha Serow.I joined the Surrey TRF and went on a few newby rides, which I really enjoyed .But at 6 foot 4 tall, even with the tallest handle bars and raisers it was never going to work well so I started wondering what I should replace the Serow with. I guess you can see where this is going.

A fairly local company (Track Sense) has decided to end the off road side of its business and sell off its fleet of Blue TT250Rs, and with some confidence gained from this excellent site I bought one (see attached image).

I haven't had time to go over it properly, which I want to do before I head off on the lanes on it, but initial impressions are that its sound but showing plenty of signs of being used as Yamaha intended (much paint missing from frame, cracked plastics etc). Its a low mileage 2005 model, but every mile hard won.

I have bought longer control cables, handle bar raisers, rear indicators and a few other bits from Totallyttrs, and am very pleased with their service, and hope to set up the bike to suit me very soon. But first (this Saturday) the dreaded MOT (road worthiness test).I've never submitted a bike with an undersize numberplate and no indicators before.

I am recently back from riding from Alaska to Patagonia with my wife on two Yamaha XT600s and have moved to where I could find a job, Guildford UK. Although I have taken my old XT600z Tenere many places on some very rough roads, including overlanding through Europe, Middle East and Asia and across the Australian outback, it was just too heavy for the local lanes. So here's looking forward to getting out on the TTR.

Thanks for a brilliant site, I expect I will soon be posting questions

All the best

Lama

Welcome to the forum Lama!

In my opinion, its best to have the bike looking a bit beaten up as you should be able to ride better not having to worry about dints and scratches wink

I like tall bars and run Dakar Highs with the 6mm spacers. Might be tempted to try the 1" risers just for fun. I also got the longer cables fitted so there is plenty of spare in that direction.

It might be worth spending £5.95 on a road legal plate just for the MOTs - I use this guy and the plates are good and arrive quickly.

Cheers

Brian

Welcome to TTR land, Mark.

You make yours seem small.

I'm tall but there's not as much clear space betwix saddle and bum on mine as yours has! biggrin

Welcome Lama

I have been busy today but never too busy to say hello to a fellow TTR owner. You really are tall but you picked the right bike for it

Enjoy the forum,

                          Jarrah.

Hi Lama,
I got the same deal from Tracksense. Having been out with them a couple of times I felt quite comfortable with what I was getting. I am Twickenham based and keen to get out there so when you have your MOT and sorted out your mods maybe a Surrey ride could be on the cards?
all the best
Pete

Hi all,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

For those of you who think I make the TTR look small, you should have seen me on he Serow!

Brian - thanks for the number plate link. It would be a good idea but I spoke to the MOT tester and got a strong impression that there would not be a problem. And yes I agree about not being worried about the bike looking a bit beaten up as I am sure that I would soon get it in that state any way.

I look forward to meeting some of you local guys fairly soon. If only I can find some spare time.

BTW Pete, if your bike has the sameafter market engine bash plate fitted as mine, it is held on with 5/16 UNC bolts and needs a 3/16 inch allen key to undo them.

Chearsfor now

Lama

Passed the MOT today.

Still want to lower the gearing, raise the handlebars, check the valve clearences, oil the air filter, adjust the rear shock and fit new tyres. Still, a step in the right direction.

Well done Lama! Always a bit of a lottery first time with a new bike but you must have done your preparation right  wink

The beauty of dirt bikes is that there is always "something else" you can do to them biggrin

Hello Lama,  sorry I'm a bit behind on the forum lately after buying a fixer-upper property, that's taking more fixing-upping than first thought..

I like the sound of your travels with your wife, my other half rides pillion on the vstrom, but just the annual aops getaway for us.

I attended a Track Sense off-road day using my own TTR, they were excellent and it was a really fun day over near Heathrow, shame they've stopped it.

I am also just down the A3 at Hindhead/Haslemere, and hopefully the house will be nearing the end come Christmas and Ill be able to get the little Yammy T&T'd early next year.  I know a few lanes, but not many so would love to be shown around by any locals.  I've been a TRF member for years, just never managed to get out with them.

all the best, Paul
