If you get a battery & run 12v power up into the clutch switch & test if the power comes through the other wire when clutch is activated this will tell you where the problem is.

Do this until you find the problem.

Some easy things to check are

Fuse

Clutch switch (as mentioned above)

Neutral switch

Right then, had a look at the bike and there is no wire going to my clutch lever, so I guess it has been disconnected in the past. What colour is it? I guess mine will now be residing under the tank or behind the headlight.

I reckon my wire was permanently earthed, as until last week the bike would start in gear without the clutch being pulled in.

Just had a look at a new genuine Yamaha switch and both wires were black. The wires on the loom may be different as per Jarrah's info.

Replacement switches available here

I know that it is easy to bypass the swich but it's there for a good purpose. If the switch is working then you can start the TTR in any gear as long as you have the clutch lever pulled in.

First thing to do would be to check if there is a curcuit through to the blue/yellow wires. If not there will be more of a problem then just the switch.

If you want to bypass it to check if it's the switch an easy way is to join the blue wire & the blue wire with a white stripe. (at the harness)

This should help...Just join as shown with the black line below....

Make sure it's in Nuetral or you have the clutch in because it will start in gear like this. (as in it may try to run away from you :)

Spraying WD40 should'nt have ruined anything. I'm thinking maybe you have a loose wire?

Many thanks for the responses. My connector at the end of the blue/yell and blue wires was bound in tape. Inside was a wire linking the two, that had come loose. Just reconnected it, and I can now start in gear again.

Just need to remember to pull the clutch in - there again, they didn't have these fancy switches when I was a boy and I managed ok then!

Another thing while we are still on subject (kinda :)

If any connectors look really bad you can take them out by using a small scewdriver or probe.

They have a tab that holds them in.

To remove ...probe the tab (making sure your probing the right side of the plug)

Then push out with another small screwdriver. (sometimes just the one is needed)

IMPORTANT: Clean them one at a time making sure that you plug them back where they came from before moving on to another connector.

IMPORTANT: Don't force the connector from the plug without probing the locking tab.

I used this old plug as an example below...

My 93 TTR has always been able to start on the button whilst in gear.  Then last week I decided as a bit of routine maintenance to spray wd40 in every electrical connector I could find.

Now the bike only starts if you put it into neutral.  What is the norm on these bikes?  I've either unwittingly repaired it or effed something up!

Personally I prefer to be able to start whilst in gear, particularly when you are up to your knees in mud!  In which case which wire do I need to disconnect?

Cheers

Lee

Hi, mine will only start in gear if the clutch is depressed, there is possibly an issue with your neutral switch.

Hi Lee, how is sunny Clacton?

You should be able to start in gear with the clutch in. There is a switch on the clutch lever, it's a small one and there is also a wire that goes to a switch in the L/H crank case. This one also does the neutral light. I seem to recall I had a problem with my raid that would cut out as soon as I put it into gear, I removed the clutch inhibit switch which made no difference so I removed the wire from the switch on the crankcase and it then started fine, but I did loose the neutral light.

It was all done in a rush when I was trying to get to work one morning, but it worked for me!

At the switch they will be black but where they go to the harness will be as in the diagram.

I'm with Brian on getting a new switch as it will be the problem. You can take it apart & clean the contacts to see if that works or buy the new one.

I might add to this thread that using WD40 is only a temporary fix/solution to using electrical cleaner.

The difference...

Electrical cleaner cost about $9.00 & actually cleans the terminals of the dirt (especially when using the nossle tube).

WD40 costs $5.00 Only cleans enough to get a decent connection & does not work so good except protecting the metal connectors.

..............................................................................

The difference in price is nothing compared to the value of a lasting repair.

Just something to keep in mind  smile
