Last time I was out of my TTr (last year I am afraid to admit) I was being followed by a guy who used to work for Geraint Jones and at the UK Yamaha Off Road School.  He observed that that my control would improve with a firmer front end.

He said that at the Yam School they had some discs of 10mm thickness machined up and inserted them in the forks on top of the springs under the fork cap to effectively increase the compression or "pre-load" of the spring.

Have any of you done this?

p.s. finally given my bike to a good mechanic (not me) to try and work out why despite my best efforts it runs like a pig.

Good to hear you are getting your TTR sorted although I thought the replacement carb had done the trick confuse

Not heard of anyone modding the TTR forks with a spacer but it is quite common for the enduro guys to do similar.

I am over 17 stone and haven't noticed an issue with the standard setup.

Hi Brian

As I said I never really realised such a mod would be worth considering, it was really observations from someone who can actually ride unlike me who just gets by and potters about.  I guess Geraint's lot also have a lot of enduro models as well which is why they probably tried it and they thought it impoved things.  Easy enough to try I guess, just thought I would see if any of you had tried it.

The TTr never really improved with the other carb.  It was different but the problems persisted.  I also established that it ran fine until the previous owner fell off in a big puddle.  Thus I suspect that it might in fact not be the carb after all but in fact something in the top end.  Not my field so having established that there is a local chap who preps enduro stuff and has a AJP franchise (nice little bikes) I have given it to him to see if there is an issue inside the head somewhere.  I also have an old 79 XL250 which I have been riding instead and I love the XL, it is so easy to ride. However I have a bunch of pals coming out in November for several days riding and the idea of three days on the XL with its agricultural suspesion is not attractive, so time to sort the TTr

On the trail riding side of things I established that if I want to charge people to come out and play I have to become qualified (at significant cost) to a level where I would be able to train youth to ride MX.  Bit like having to become a qualified mountaineer so that you can take folk on a ramble.  Thus I need to find a locally qualifed frenchie to officially take people out and charge them whilst I do the back office and hospitality or just have pals to stay from time to time as B&B guests that I happen to go out trail riding with.

In reality renovations have been slow as I still had a job in the UK to look after which I have now given up so renovations going ahead at full speed.  Weather here has been really dry this summer (really!) and although a bit of rain over the last week or so it is still as a dry as a chip here.  Loking forward to some rain so that the trail become more fun.

 I remember reading about modding forks by putting a 20mm spacer under the cap and I think it was in the FAQ's some years ago. It may have been a link in the FAQ's to another forum. It was some years ago.

There are some posts in Thumper Talk about spacers under the caps. They have been using plastic waste pipe as a spacer.
