kick starter

Hi all

I have a blue 02. It won't start on the kick starter. It will return when I kick it & I can hear whirling inside but there is no great resistance when I kick.

Is it engaging? Is it slipping?

How does it work?

Where should I look for further info? (I've had a look at the FAQ but that's for installing a kickstarter.)

What's wrong/ what should I do?

Cheers

Mark

PS Let me take the opportunity to say what a useful forum this is... it's the forum that has kept me from going over to a DRZ

Have you downloaded the manual yet ?

this downloads the manual direct from my fileden account, I just downloaded it so it still works OK

Instant Manual Download for the Blue TTR only.

The kickstart mechanism on the TTR is robust and simple. The worst that normally happens is to the kickstart lever breaking or its shaft losing its splines if the lever isn't attached firmly. I suspect that you have already ruled out the obvious culprits.

Does the engine turn over and start on the e-start?

I am guessing that, as the kicker is turning the engine over, the problem lies elsewhere and that your engine has lost its compression. I hope I am wrong but if the kicker mechanism is working, what else would allow the engine to spin so easily?

Simple check. Take the plug out and put your finger over the plug hole whilst turning over the engine (don't forget to ground the plug). The compression should really kick it off. If you can keep it there then I am afaraid you have a top end strip down ahead of you - assuming your valve clearances are OK and that a valve isn't being kept open by a tight cam  cry

Do the blue TTRs have a decompression lever which could have been stuck open?

This is what i was thinking it could be but did'nt want to say it hmm

If your kickstart is returning okay & the shaft is not slipping on the kickstart spline then it could very well be the above no

...............................................................................................................................................................................

From what i can gather  & experiences with them is that all blue TTR's from 1999 to the lastest model do not have a de-compression lever but someone may have put one on so something to check also.

Good luck with it & let us know how you go

Thanks very much gentlemen for the advice.

The bike starts and runs fine on the starter button so I'm assuming compression etc is all OK so it is something along the lines of; the spring is OK but the engagement is not.

So looking inside the bike is the next thing to do.

The pinnacle of my mechanical career has been changing a clutch & clutch cable on another bike so I'm more or less OK about going into my pride & joy but I'm saved from doing this immediately by not having the space in my garage until I've sold another bike.

I've got the manual downloaded already so I'm all set to go in.

I'll keep you posted/ask desperately & urgently when the time comes

Thanks again for prompt, succint, meaningful replies- the only forum I know that follows a cordial, user friendly ettiquette

Mark

Hey Mark,

If the compression is okay then i would be taking it apart & finding the problem. You may want to do this asap incase it is something bad like nut coming loose ect.

When you have the parts & are ready for that all important desperate, urgent rush to get it back on the road i'll be waiting.
